A practical P5 to P6 timeline

How the PSLE is scored, and why one band matters
PSLE is administered by SEAB on behalf of MOE and reported on the AL (Achievement Level) system since 2021. Each of the four subjects (English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, Science) is scored AL1 to AL8, and the four-subject total determines secondary-school posting through the centralised choice-and-cut-off system. Under Full Subject-Based Banding there are no Express or Normal streams.
A PSLE Score of 4 to 20 means Posting Group 3, 21 to 22 means Posting Group 2 or 3, 23 to 24 means Posting Group 2, 25 means Posting Group 1 or 2, and 26 to 30 (with AL7 or better in English and Maths) means Posting Group 1. The arithmetic of posting is unforgiving, moving any one subject by one AL band can swing the secondary-school choice.

Each subject needs a different lead time
The four subjects need different lead times. English Composition (Paper 1) and Continuous Writing build slowly, which is one reason families start in P5. Math Paper 2 problem-sum work centres on model-drawing discipline. Science open-ended question style is very teachable (because the SEAB mark scheme rewards specific verbs: state, explain, predict, compare). Higher Chinese / Mother Tongue often takes the longest to improve.

PSLE Preparation Home Tuition: frequently asked questions
When should PSLE preparation start?
P5 for foundation building, P6 for revision and timed-paper practice. Students who close gaps in P5 reach P6 able to drill rather than catch up, which is where the bigger AL gains come from.
Which PSLE subject should we prioritise?
Usually the weakest one, because secondary-school posting runs on the four-subject AL total, a one-band improvement in a weak subject moves the posting score more than polishing a strong subject.
How predictive is the P6 prelim?
The P6 prelim is a useful check on readiness, but each school sets its own paper, so it is not a forecast of the PSLE result. Its weak spots are best treated as a precise revision list for the final weeks.
How much does PSLE Preparation Home Tuition Singapore cost?
