Where Primary 2 Maths starts to slip
P2 looks gentle on paper, but habits form this year that decide how P3 goes. These are the signs parents most often notice during homework.
Times-table facts such as 4 x 3 are still counted on fingers, so a page of division takes far longer than it should.
Subtraction across a zero, such as 402 minus 187, goes wrong, and the answer is not checked.
In a word problem, 'how many more' is read as a signal to add, so the right numbers give the wrong answer.
Time questions stall when 1 hour 20 minutes has to be written as 80 minutes, or the minute hand is read as the hour.

When comparing fractions, 1/5 is picked as bigger than 1/3 because 5 is bigger than 3.
Each of these is small on its own, and each is much easier to fix in P2 than once P3 adds bigger numbers.

Primary 2 Maths Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 2 Maths builds the number sense the rest of primary school stands on. The P2 MOE syllabus covers whole numbers to 1,000, addition and subtraction within 1,000, the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 with the matching division, simple fractions, money, length, mass and volume, time, picture graphs, and 2D and 3D shapes. Word problems also get longer in P2, so a child who reads slowly or guesses the operation starts losing marks even when the arithmetic is fine.

A P2 home tutor keeps the pace of the school topics and fixes gaps while they are still small: place value, regrouping in subtraction, and times-table recall that is quick rather than counted on fingers. Lessons use concrete and pictorial steps first, then short written practice, and the tutor tells you what your child can do on their own and what still needs help. This is the year to make Maths feel manageable before P3 adds larger numbers, area and perimeter.
Here is a typical P2 question: Mei has 402 stickers and gives away 187. How many are left? The common error is in the ones and tens. A child takes 2 from 7 instead of regrouping, does the same with the tens, and writes 385, or gets stuck because there are no tens to borrow from. The correct method regroups 4 hundreds as 3 hundreds, 9 tens and 10 ones, which gives 215. A tutor then has your child check with the inverse: 215 plus 187 is 402. Checking subtraction with addition builds the link between operations that the syllabus also asks for in multiplication and division, and it is a habit that saves marks in every later year.

Primary 2 Maths Tuition: frequently asked questions
Does my child sit exams in Primary 2?
No. Since 2019, P1 and P2 pupils in MOE primary schools do not sit weighted assessments or examinations. Teachers use class activities and short checks instead, and give feedback in words rather than marks. That makes gaps harder for parents to see. A P2 tutor can tell you plainly which topics your child manages alone and which still need support.
How much does Primary 2 Maths tuition cost?
P2 is in our Lower Primary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$30 to S$40 for an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 for a full-time tutor, and S$50 to S$65 for an ex-MOE teacher. Most P2 families start with one lesson a week of about an hour, so you can work out a monthly figure before the trial lesson.
Is P2 too early for Maths tuition?
It depends on what you see at home. If your child is confident and only needs practice, school work and a little home practice may be enough. Tuition makes sense when times tables are still counted, word problems are avoided, or the same subtraction errors keep coming back. One lesson a week of about an hour suits most seven and eight year olds.
What should my child know by the end of P2?
By the end of P2 the syllabus expects numbers to 1,000, written addition and subtraction up to 3 digits, the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables with matching division, adding like fractions within one whole, money in dollars and cents, time to the minute, and picture graphs with scales. P3 then adds the 6 to 9 tables and numbers to 10,000.
