Primary 2 Maths Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 2 Maths builds the number sense the rest of primary school stands on. The P2 MOE syllabus covers whole numbers to 1,000, addition and subtraction within 1,000, the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 with the matching division, simple fractions, money, length, mass and volume, time, picture graphs, and 2D and 3D shapes. Word problems also get longer in P2, so a child who reads slowly or guesses the operation starts losing marks even when the arithmetic is fine.

A P2 home tutor keeps the pace of the school topics and fixes gaps while they are still small: place value, regrouping in subtraction, and times-table recall that is quick rather than counted on fingers. Lessons use concrete and pictorial steps first, then short written practice, and the tutor tells you what your child can do on their own and what still needs help. This is the year to make Maths feel manageable before P3 adds larger numbers, area and perimeter.
