PSLE Mathematics Syllabus & Study Guide

The AL bands are fixed raw-mark bands: AL1 is 90 and above, AL2 is 85 to 89, AL3 is 80 to 84, AL4 is 75 to 79, AL5 is 65 to 74, AL6 is 45 to 64, AL7 is 20 to 44 and AL8 is below 20. AL3 and AL4 are only five marks apart, and that gap is almost entirely about Paper 2 long questions, where multi-step word problems compound errors quickly. Lessons coach the heuristics MOE rewards (model drawing, units and parts, working backwards, supposition, before-and-after), train students to identify the correct heuristic in the first 30 seconds of reading a question, and run timed Paper 2 simulations against the published past papers from 2013 onwards.

Many Primary 6 parents start tuition only in January of P6, which leaves less than a year before PSLE in October. Starting by mid-P5 (June or July) gives 12 to 14 months for foundation building, heuristic mastery, and progressive past-paper exposure. Students starting in P6 January have less time, so lessons prioritise the widest foundation gaps before full past-paper work. On the topical map, PSLE Math weights percentages, ratio, fractions and rate unusually heavily because they appear together in Paper 2 long questions disguised as multi-step word problems. Geometry and area sit second on the weighting list, with the trickier questions involving overlapping shapes, units conversion and the area-difference technique that catches even strong students.

Our diagnostic tests in the first two lessons grade your child against the most recent five PSLE papers, surface the precise topic loss pattern (heuristic recognition versus computation versus answer presentation), and shape the rest of the term around closing those gaps. Parents can ask the tutor for an update at any time. For students at schools with demanding internal papers, the tutor also sets targets against the school's own tests.

The PSLE outcome is built on a P3 to P6 syllabus progression, and the P3 and P4 years matter more than most parents expect. The Primary 3 maths syllabus introduces multiplication and division to 10,000, the first fraction concepts (equivalent fractions, comparing), money, time, length, mass and volume word problems, bar graphs, area and perimeter, and angles. The Primary 4 syllabus extends to factors and multiples, mixed numbers and improper fractions, decimals to three places, symmetry, tables and line graphs.

The Primary 5 syllabus then makes the biggest jump: fractions and division, percentage, rate, area of triangles, volume of cubes and cuboids, and the harder geometry (angle properties of triangles, parallelograms, rhombuses and trapeziums). P6 completes the map with ratio, algebra, circles, special quadrilaterals and average before the year turns to PSLE revision. A student who is shaky on P3 to P4 fractions will hit a wall at P5 percentage and P6 ratio, so a good tutor checks P3 to P4 fractions and bar models first before moving ahead.
