Why this cohort matters
A child sitting the PSLE in 2027 starts Secondary 1 in 2028 under Full Subject-Based Banding and will sit the SEC. The PSLE itself and its AL scoring are unchanged, and posting still runs on the total score. What has changed is that the PSLE result now sets a starting level for each subject rather than a single stream, which makes a strong result in each subject slightly more valuable. PSLE 2026 to Secondary 1 in 2027 explains the transition, and PSLE explained covers the scoring.
Your options, compared
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition centre | Structured practice for a child keeping up | Fixed group pace; less attention on individual errors |
| Home tutor | A child with a specific weak subject or topic | Tutor quality varies widely |
| Online tutor | Flexible timing | Younger children often struggle to focus on screen |
| Tuition agency | Choosing among matched tutors without searching | Check the fee and re-match policy |
For primary school children, one-to-one teaching tends to work well because a patient tutor can see exactly where a child's reasoning breaks down, which a group class rarely has time for.
What actually moves an AL
| Subject | Where marks are usually lost | What good tuition fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | Multi-step problem sums in Paper 2 | Heuristics and clear working, practised under time |
| Science | Imprecise keywords in open-ended answers | Answering in the language the mark scheme credits |
| English | Composition structure and comprehension inference | Planning, vocabulary and answer technique |
| Mother Tongue | Oral and written expression | Regular practice with feedback |
Our guides to PSLE Math heuristics and the 3 math topics that decide the PSLE go deeper on the highest-stakes subject.
When to start
Primary 5 is the most common and generally the most effective starting point: it leaves a full year to close gaps before the Primary 6 exam year becomes about practice rather than new learning. Starting in the middle of Primary 6 still helps, but leaves less room to fix a weak topic properly. Our view on timing is in why January beats June.

How The Singapore Syllabus fits
If a home tutor is the right format for your child, this is how we work, stated plainly so you can compare it against any other option.
| What you get | How it works |
|---|---|
| A shortlist, not a single pick | 2 to 4 tutor profiles matched to your child's level, subject and area, within 48 hours |
| Profiles you can judge | Each shows the tutor's credentials, hourly rate and teaching approach |
| Three price tiers | Undergraduate, full-time specialist and ex-MOE or NIE-trained teachers |
| No separate agency fee | You pay only the hourly rate shown on your tutor shortlist |
| A free re-match | If the first tutor is not the right fit, we match again at no charge |
| No long-term contract | Lessons continue for as long as they are working |
We cover every PSLE subject from Primary 1 to Primary 6, with tutors teaching in English and Mandarin. For subject detail, see PSLE preparation, Primary math tuition, Primary science tuition and Primary English tuition. Common questions
Which PSLE subject should I get tuition for first?
The one where your child is furthest below their other subjects. Because the PSLE score adds four AL bands, lifting the weakest subject usually improves the total most.
Is Primary 4 too early for PSLE tuition?
Not if a real gap has appeared, particularly in Mathematics, where later topics build on earlier ones. Otherwise Primary 5 is the natural starting point.
Home tutor or tuition centre for PSLE?
A centre suits a child who is keeping up and wants structured practice. A home tutor suits a child with a specific weak area who needs attention at their own pace.
Does the SEC change the PSLE?
No. The PSLE, AL scoring and posting are unchanged. The SEC applies at the end of secondary school.
