Science starts in Primary 3 in Singapore, and the earliest habits carry through to the PSLE three years later. The MOE primary science syllabus is organised around five themes, Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Interactions and Energy, taught across P3-P4 (lower block) and P5-P6 (upper block). Science tuition for primary 3 and primary 4 students focuses on concept accuracy and the first exposure to process skills: observing, comparing, inferring from data, and writing answers in the cause-and-effect language the marking scheme rewards.

This matters because primary science is graded on precise scientific phrasing from the very first paper, a P3 student who writes "the plant died because it was hot" instead of "the plant lost more water through evaporation than it absorbed" is already losing the marks that will later separate AL bands.
Science tuition for primary 5 and primary 6 students shifts to the PSLE format, which from 2026 is Booklet A (30 multiple-choice questions, 60 marks) and Booklet B (10 to 11 structured questions, 40 marks). Both booklets decide the grade: Booklet A rewards careful reading of every option, and Booklet B demands the keyword discipline, data-interpretation and experiment-analysis skills that many students have not been explicitly taught.

When should science tuition start, P3, P4 or P5?
The most common start is P5 mid-year, when the upper-block content jump shows up in school marks. The better-value start is P4: the phrasing and process-skill habits that decide Booklet B marks take time to become automatic, and a P4 start means the PSLE year is spent sharpening rather than rebuilding.
Why does my child understand science but score poorly?
Almost always answer construction. Primary science marking awards specific keywords and cause-and-effect phrasing; a child who understands the concept but writes everyday language loses the mark anyway. This gap is coachable: tutors drill the phrasing until it is habit.
How is PSLE Science structured?
One paper, 1 hour 45 minutes. From 2026, Booklet A has 30 multiple-choice questions worth 60 marks and Booklet B has 10 to 11 structured questions worth 40 marks. Booklet A now carries more of the grade, and Booklet B still separates the AL bands because answers need precise phrasing and process-skill application.
