English exam papers, PSLE to SEC G3
The papers your child will sit, as set out in the SEAB syllabuses.
PSLE English: the four papers
Paper 2 carries the most weight, but the composition in Paper 1 is the single largest task.
| Paper | What it tests | Marks | Time | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Writing | Situational writing (14 marks) and continuous writing (36 marks). The composition is at least 150 words and based on at least one of three pictures | 50 | 1 h 10 min | 25% |
| Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension | Booklet A: 25 multiple-choice questions on grammar, vocabulary and a visual text. Booklet B: grammar cloze, editing for spelling and grammar, comprehension cloze, synthesis and transformation, and open-ended comprehension | 90 | 1 h 50 min | 45% |
| Paper 3: Listening Comprehension | 20 multiple-choice questions. Each text is read twice | 20 | About 35 min | 10% |
| Paper 4: Oral Communication | Reading aloud (15 marks) and a conversation with the examiners about a photo (25 marks) | 40 | About 10 min, including 5 min to prepare the reading passage | 20% |

SEC G3 English (K300) from 2027: the four papers
Writing and Comprehension carry 35% each. Students in Sec 4 in 2026 sit the final O-Level English papers instead.
| Paper | What it tests | Marks | Time | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Writing | Editing (10 marks), situational writing of 250 to 350 words (30 marks) and continuous writing of 350 to 500 words on one of four topics (30 marks) | 70 | 1 h 50 min | 35% |
| Paper 2: Comprehension | Questions on four texts, one of them visual, and a summary of about 80 words | 50 | 1 h 50 min | 35% |
| Paper 3: Listening | Listening tasks, then a note-taking task on a recording heard once | 30 | About 45 min | 10% |
| Paper 4: Oral Communication | A planned response of up to 2 minutes to a video clip, then a discussion with the examiners. Taken on a computer | 30 | About 20 min, including 10 min to prepare | 20% |

English Tuition: a guide for parents
What English tuition works on
Most lost marks in English come from three places: composition planning, comprehension answers that do not use the passage, and oral. A tutor works on whichever of the three is costing your child marks, using your child's own school work. A child who writes well but loses comprehension marks needs a different plan from a child whose compositions are short and repeat the same sentence patterns.
English also builds slowly. Vocabulary and sentence variety come from reading and from marked writing practice over months, so families often start before an exam year rather than in it.

Primary English and the PSLE
In lower primary, tuition is mostly reading, phonics and sentence building. From P3 to P4 the school papers take the PSLE shape, and P5 and P6 practise each PSLE paper directly.
Secondary English: the last O-Level and the SEC from 2027
For JC admission from 2028, students need G3 English at A1 to C6, and English can count as L1 in the L1R4 score. So English matters for every Sec 3 and Sec 4 student aiming for JC, whatever their other subjects.
JC General Paper
General Paper is taken by JC students for the A-Level. Tutors work on essay planning, building a store of examples, and the comprehension paper's application question. See our GP tuition page for how lessons run.

English Tuition: frequently asked questions
How much does English tuition cost in Singapore?
English home tuition typically runs S$30 to S$65 an hour for P1 to P4, S$35 to S$75 for P5 and P6, S$35 to S$80 for Sec 1 and 2, S$45 to S$95 for Sec 3 and 4, and S$55 to S$130 for JC General Paper, depending on the tutor.
Is home English tuition better than a tuition centre?
For a specific gap, such as composition or comprehension, 1-to-1 tuition at home or online is usually more effective, because the tutor marks your child's own writing and works at your child's pace. A centre can suit a child who is coping and wants a fixed weekly class. Neither is better for every child.
Do you cover composition only?
Yes. If writing is the only gap, a tutor can spend every lesson on composition and situational writing. See our composition tuition page for how those lessons run.
Do you cover General Paper?
Yes. We match JC students with GP tutors for essay planning, examples and the comprehension paper. See our GP tuition page.
