What gets in the way in Primary 4 English

P4 papers are longer and the answers need more precision. These are the problems that cost the most marks in P4, often just before the results that set P5 subjects.

Open-ended comprehension answers give one point when the question is worth two, so half the marks go every time.

Joining two sentences with a given word, such as although or unless, changes the meaning or leaves out a detail.

The same grammar slip, such as a missing past tense ending, appears in every composition.

Stories build up well and then end in two rushed sentences because the plan did not include the ending.

Reading aloud is accurate but flat, with no pauses or change of tone for questions and dialogue.

These are fixable with focused practice and careful review of each returned paper, and P4 is the time to do it.

How P4 results set the P5 English level

Subject-based banding starts in P5. This is how MOE describes the steps, from the P4 results to the PSLE.

MOE states that a Foundation subject is not a disadvantage, as it builds the fundamentals for secondary school. The aim of P4 English tuition is to give your child a real choice, not to chase a particular label.

StageWhat happens
End of P4The school recommends a subject combination based on the end-of-year exam results, and you fill in an option form with your preference.
Passed 3 or more subjects in P4Your child is offered English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science, all at Standard level. Higher Mother Tongue may be offered too.
Passed 2 or fewer subjects in P4The choice runs from 4 Standard subjects to a mix of Standard and Foundation, or 4 Foundation subjects.
End of P5The school assesses whether your child can cope with the chosen subjects and adjusts the levels if needed.
P6Your child takes the school-recommended combination and sits the PSLE.

Primary 4 English Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 4 English looks like P3 with longer passages, but the year matters more than it seems. At the end of P4, the school recommends your child's P5 subject combination based on the year's exam results. A child who passes three or more subjects is offered all four subjects at Standard level. That makes P4 the last full year to close English gaps before the Standard or Foundation choice. In the syllabus, P4 is still Middle Primary. Children are expected to write with an explicit awareness of how different types of text are organised, and to use linking words and grammar to connect ideas across sentences and paragraphs.

A P4 English tutor works on what school papers expose most at this level: open-ended comprehension answers that are only half complete, sentences that need joining or rewriting without changing the meaning, grammar slips that repeat from one composition to the next, and stories that start well but end in a rush. Oral practice matters too, because reading aloud and talking about a picture both get harder from here. Lessons are 1-to-1, at home or online. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles on WhatsApp within 16 hours, each with qualifications, experience and the hourly rate, so you can compare before the trial lesson.

A sentence-joining task of the kind P4 school papers use: join It was raining heavily. The boys continued their football match. Begin with Although. A common wrong answer is Although it was raining heavily, but the boys continued their football match, which uses two joining words. Another is Although the boys continued their football match, which drops the rain. A tutor teaches a short checklist. Does the new sentence keep every fact? Does it use only the given joining word? Is the punctuation right? The correct answer is Although it was raining heavily, the boys continued their football match. Your child then tries five more with words such as unless, despite and so that, each checked against the same list.

Primary 4 English Tuition: frequently asked questions

Why does P4 English matter for P5?

At the end of P4, the school recommends a P5 subject combination based on the year's exam results. A child who passes three or more subjects is offered all four at Standard level. Others may be offered a mix of Standard and Foundation subjects. The school then reviews the combination at the end of P5, so P4 is not the final word, but it does set the starting point.

What is the difference between Standard and Foundation English?

Both are taken in P5 and P6 and lead to the PSLE. The Foundation English paper (SEAB code 0031) is shorter, worth 100 marks instead of 200, with fewer items and simpler tasks, such as a composition of at least 120 words based on a series of pictures. Foundation results are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6, AL7 or AL8. MOE says taking a Foundation subject is not a disadvantage.

How much does Primary 4 English tuition cost?

P4 is in our Lower Primary band: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Some P4 families add a second lesson in the weeks before the end-of-year exam, then return to one a week.

Does P4 English tuition include oral practice?

It should, if school assesses oral, which most do. Reading aloud and talking about a picture both improve quickly with a listener who gives specific feedback, such as where to pause or how to add a reason. A tutor usually gives oral ten to fifteen minutes in some lessons, and more in the weeks before the school's oral assessment.
