Paper 1 is a 90-minute essay chosen from eight questions spanning politics, science and technology, arts, society and ethics, graded on the quality of argument, breadth of examples and precision of language.

Paper 2 is comprehension on three passages (about 1,200 words in total), ending with the Application Question (AQ), worth 12 marks, requiring the student to evaluate the author's arguments against their own society's context. Both papers have teachable methods, and students stuck at C and D are often missing the method, not the ability.
