General Paper (H1, syllabus 8881) is the most underestimated subject in the JC curriculum. Every JC student takes it, it feeds directly into the University Admission Score (an A in GP is worth 10 of the 70 rank points), and yet most students prepare for it least, because GP feels unstudyable, "just English and general knowledge". It is neither.
Paper 1 is a 90-minute essay chosen from eight questions spanning politics, science and technology, arts, society and ethics, graded on the quality of argument, breadth of examples and precision of language. Paper 2 is comprehension on one or two passages, ending with the Application Question (AQ), a 10-mark mini-essay requiring the student to evaluate the author's arguments against their own society's context. Both papers have teachable methods, and the students stuck at C and D year after year are almost always missing the method, not the intelligence.

Why GP Grades Get Stuck
