PSLE English is the most weighted subject in PSLE alongside Mathematics, and it is the subject most often misunderstood by parents who themselves grew up in a different examination system. The format consists of four papers. Paper 1 is Composition (40 marks total: 15 for Situational Writing and 25 for Continuous Writing). Paper 2 is split into Booklet A grammar, vocabulary and language use (28 marks) and Booklet B comprehension and editing (67 marks). Paper 3 is Listening Comprehension (20 marks).

Paper 4 is Oral, with planned reading (10 marks) and stimulus-based conversation (20 marks). The dominant grade-determining sections are Paper 1 Continuous Writing and Paper 2 Booklet B Open-Ended Comprehension, which together account for over 40 percent of the marks and are the hardest to coach without a structured approach.

Our PSLE English tutors focus on the most important sections in each paper. For Continuous Writing, we coach plot construction, character motivation and language craft (figurative devices, varied sentence structures, precise vocabulary). For Open-Ended Comprehension, we drill the four most common question types (literal recall, inferential, vocabulary in context, evaluative) with the band-specific marking-rubric vocabulary. For Booklet A grammar, we work on the high-frequency loss areas (subject-verb agreement with collective nouns, conditional tenses, prepositions of time and place).

For Oral, we coach planned reading prosody and stimulus-based response structure (frame your view, give a reason, offer a personal example). Our tutors are NIE-trained primary English teachers, ex-MOE PSLE markers, or graduates with English Literature, Linguistics or strong humanities backgrounds. Lessons run weekly in 90-minute slots that comfortably cover one targeted skill plus practice.

PSLE English is the subject parents most often misjudge by reading instinct. The instinct says vocabulary lists and grammar drills feel productive, so they get bought in bulk. The data says they shift the Booklet A mark by 1 to 2 points and leave the Continuous Writing mark untouched. The Continuous Writing mark moves only when a student writes a fresh composition every week and gets line-by-line feedback on plot pacing, character interiority and word choice.

We therefore set the homework cadence accordingly: one composition per week for the entire 12 to 14 month arc, with the tutor returning each piece annotated within 5 days. By the September prelim, your child will have written 40 to 50 compositions with feedback. That is roughly 4 to 5 times what the school requires, and it is the single change that lifts the Continuous Writing band from 16 out of 25 to 20 out of 25.

Common PSLE English Struggles We Fix

PSLE English at the AL3 and above bands is decided on Composition content quality and Open-Ended Comprehension precision. The patterns we see most often:

Composition stays at the band 3 mark range because plots are flat, characters are undeveloped, and language is functional rather than expressive.

Open-Ended Comprehension answers are partially correct but miss the marking-rubric keyword (for example saying "felt sad" when the rubric requires "experienced grief").

Booklet A grammar loses 4 to 6 marks consistently on the same handful of question types (tenses, prepositions, subject-verb agreement).

Oral planned reading is monotone or paced incorrectly, capping the mark at 6 or 7 out of 10.

Stimulus-based Oral conversation lacks structured response, making the answer feel rambling or off-topic.

Vocabulary range in writing stays narrow, with the same 30 to 40 active words appearing in every composition.

These are the gaps our PSLE English tutors fix with structured weekly skill drills and detailed feedback on every piece of writing the student produces.

PSLE English Programme Structure

A coherent four-paper programme that prioritises the highest-mark sections (Continuous Writing and Open-Ended Comprehension):

1. Composition (Paper 1)

Both Situational Writing and Continuous Writing, with a content-development emphasis for Continuous Writing.

  • Situational Writing format and tone matching
  • Continuous Writing plot construction (problem, escalation, resolution)
  • Character development and dialogue
  • Vocabulary expansion (precise verbs, sensory details, figurative language)
  • Sentence variety and rhythm
  • Common content-mark losses and how to recover them

2. Comprehension (Paper 2 Booklet B)

Open-Ended Comprehension is the hardest section to coach without rubric awareness. Our tutors drill the answer-format expectations directly.

  • Literal recall (paraphrase, do not lift)
  • Inferential reasoning (evidence-then-inference structure)
  • Vocabulary in context (definition matching with text evidence)
  • Evaluative questions (state view, give reason, support with text)
  • Editing and synthesis questions (Booklet B short answers)
  • Visual text (Booklet B questions on infographics and notices)

3. Grammar, Vocabulary, Language Use (Booklet A)

A structured drill on the loss patterns in Booklet A.

  • Tenses (especially conditional and present perfect)
  • Subject-verb agreement (collective nouns, indefinite pronouns)
  • Prepositions (time, place, agent)
  • Synthesis and transformation
  • Vocabulary cloze with high-frequency PSLE words
  • Editing for spelling and grammar errors

4. Listening and Oral (Papers 3 and 4)

Often deprioritised in school but worth 30 of the 200 PSLE English marks combined.

  • Listening Comprehension question-type recognition
  • Note-taking discipline during the second listen
  • Oral planned reading (intonation, pacing, expression)
  • Oral stimulus-based conversation structure
  • Common conversation prompts and response frameworks
  • Confidence drills against past PSLE oral stimuli

Why Choose Us for English?

PSLE English Specialists

Our tutors specifically teach the PSLE English format, not general primary English. They know the marking-rubric vocabulary for Composition and Open-Ended Comprehension that determines band placement.

Detailed Writing Feedback

Every piece of writing the student produces gets line-by-line tutor feedback. Generic comments like "good story" do not lift content marks. Specific comments on plot pacing, character motivation and word choice do.

Aligned to School Termly Tests

We ask which primary school your child attends. The lesson sequence aligns to the school termly test rotation so tuition reinforces school content rather than running in parallel.

What Our Parents Say

"My son was getting AL5 for English consistently because his compositions were always 16 to 18 out of 25, just bad enough to drag the overall mark. The tutor worked on his content development for 6 months and his last prelim composition scored 22. Final PSLE English came out as AL2."

- Mrs. Lim

Parent from Bedok

"Open-Ended Comprehension was killing my marks. I knew the answers but I was using the wrong words. My tutor taught me the keyword vocabulary that the marker is looking for. Booklet B mark went up 8 marks in one term."

- Yumi

PSLE student from Tampines

English: Frequently Asked Questions

What does PSLE English assess?

PSLE English spans writing, language use and comprehension, listening comprehension and an oral examination — content and language are assessed together.

Which PSLE English component is hardest to improve?

Composition (Continuous Writing) needs the longest lead time, because band shifts depend on planning and sentence-variety habits built over months.

How is PSLE English graded?

English is one of the four PSLE subjects, each graded AL1 to AL8, with the four ALs summed into the PSLE Score.
