P1 and P2: reading, number sense and habits
Lower primary is about fluency and confidence: reading a question properly, number bonds and place value, quick recall of the times tables, and a steady homework routine. Children who guess the operation in P2 word problems, or count on their fingers into P3, are the ones who struggle when problem sums get longer. A tutor at this stage keeps pace with the school topics and fixes small gaps before they grow.
P3 and P4: the step up, and the Standard or Foundation decision
Science starts in P3, and Maths moves to larger numbers, fractions, area and perimeter, and the first model drawings for multi-step problem sums. At the end of P4, the school recommends whether each subject is taken at Standard or Foundation level in P5 and P6, so P4 results matter for what comes next. This is a good time to secure fractions and decimals, which the P5 and P6 topics are built on.
P5 and P6: the PSLE years
P5 carries the heaviest new content of primary school, including ratio, percentage and rate in Maths and the human body systems and energy in Science. P6 is a revision and exam-technique year. Each PSLE subject is graded AL1 (90 marks and above) to AL8, and the four ALs add up to the PSLE Score used for secondary school posting, so the work goes into the question types where a child is losing marks, such as Paper 2 problem sums and Science open-ended answers.
What primary tuition costs per month
Rates are per hour and depend on the level and the tutor tier. For lower primary, one 1.5-hour lesson a week with a full-time tutor at S$40 to S$55 an hour comes to about S$260 to S$355 a month. In the PSLE years, two hours a week with an ex-MOE teacher at S$55 to S$75 an hour comes to about S$475 to S$645 a month. Undergraduate tutors cost less, from S$30 an hour for lower primary.

How much does primary tuition cost in Singapore?
Primary home tuition runs about S$30 to S$75 an hour. Lower primary (P1 to P4) costs S$30 to S$40 with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$65 with an ex-MOE teacher. Upper primary (P5 and P6) costs S$35 to S$50, S$45 to S$60 and S$55 to S$75 for the same tiers.
How many lessons a week does a primary school child need?
Most lower primary children do well with one lesson of 1 to 1.5 hours a week. In P5 and P6, 1.5 to 2 hours a week per subject is common, and some families add a second weekly lesson in the months before the PSLE written papers.
When should my child start PSLE preparation?
Most families begin focused PSLE preparation in P5 and step it up in P6. Starting in January of P5 builds the foundation calmly, while leaving it to mid-P6 squeezes everything into the months before the exam.
Can a tutor help with Foundation subjects?
Yes. Foundation Maths and Science cover a smaller set of topics at a gentler pace, and a tutor follows the level your child actually takes. If your child is close to the Standard level, the tutor can tell you honestly whether moving up is realistic.
Which primary subjects do you cover?
Math, English, Science and the Mother Tongue languages (Chinese, Malay and Tamil), including Higher Chinese and English composition. Lessons follow the current MOE primary syllabus and your child's school topics.
