PSLE Chinese (普通华文) follows a similar four-paper structure to PSLE English. Paper 1 is composition, Paper 2 is language use and comprehension (Booklets A and B), Paper 3 is listening, Paper 4 is oral. Higher Chinese (高级华文) has its own paper structure, taken in addition by SAP-track students at Catholic High Primary, Nan Hua, Pei Chun Public, Maris Stella, Tao Nan and similar schools. The dominant gap-creator across both standards is composition.
The PSLE Chinese composition (看图作文) gives a series of pictures and a partial scenario, and students must write a story that demonstrates language range, plot construction and character motivation. Students who plateau at AL5 typically have one of three issues: vocabulary range too narrow (the same 200 to 300 active words appearing in every composition), grammar mistakes that compound under exam time pressure, or weak oral conversation that drops the Oral mark below 18 out of 30.
Our PSLE Chinese tutors run a structured weekly programme that combines composition practice, comprehension drilling and oral coaching. Composition work focuses on theme-recognition (each year's PSLE composition has a recognisable thematic family: friendship, perseverance, family conflict, helping others), plot-structure templates (problem, escalation, climax, resolution, reflection), and vocabulary expansion using the SEAB-recommended word list plus topic-specific vocabulary banks. Comprehension drilling emphasises Open-Ended question types (factual recall, inferential, vocabulary in context). Oral coaching covers planned reading (intonation, pacing, expression) and stimulus-based conversation (frame your view, give a reason, offer a personal example). Tutors are NIE-trained Chinese specialists, ex-MOE PSLE Chinese markers, or graduates from strong Chinese-language backgrounds (typically ex-Catholic High, ex-Nan Hua or NIE Chinese department).
For students from English-dominant home environments (a common pattern in Punggol, Sengkang and Bukit Timah), the binding constraint is not grammar but vocabulary range and idiom familiarity. PSLE Chinese composition rewards specific Chinese phrasing: the four-character idioms (chengyu), the descriptive verbs that English-leaning students never see at home, and the rhythmic sentence variety that comes only from regular Chinese reading. Our tutors run a parallel "20 chengyu and 30 descriptive verbs per week" programme alongside composition practice.
Within 16 to 20 weeks, the active vocabulary doubles and compositions visibly shift from a thin AL5 register to a textured AL3 register. For students at SAP-track schools (Catholic High Primary, Pei Chun Public, Nan Chiau Primary, Maris Stella, Tao Nan, Ai Tong) we also coach the Higher Chinese paper alongside Standard Chinese. The two are taught in parallel and book one slot per week each.
Common PSLE Chinese Struggles We Fix
PSLE Chinese at AL3 and above bands is decided on composition content quality and oral fluency. The patterns we see most often:
Composition stays at the band 3 mark range because vocabulary is repetitive, plots are flat, and figurative language is absent.
Open-Ended comprehension answers are partially correct but lift directly from the passage rather than paraphrasing.
Grammar errors compound under composition time pressure (incorrect particle usage, run-on sentences, mixed verb tenses).
Oral planned reading is choppy or monotone, capping the mark at 12 to 14 out of 20.
Stimulus-based oral conversation lacks structure, making the answer feel rambling.
Listening comprehension scores drop on the second-half questions where information density rises.
Our PSLE Chinese programme drills these specific areas with structured weekly skill-targeting and detailed composition feedback in Chinese.

What Our Parents Say
"My son was scoring AL5 in Chinese throughout P5. We started tuition in July of P5 and the tutor focused entirely on composition for the first three months. By P6 prelims he was scoring 32 to 35 out of 40 on composition. Final PSLE Chinese was AL3."
- Mrs. Chen
Parent from Bishan
"Higher Chinese was killing my overall PSLE because I was getting borderline pass. The tutor knew the SAP-school curriculum well and aligned to my school CAs. I ended up with Distinction in Higher Chinese."
- Aiden
PSLE student from Toa Payoh
Chinese: Frequently Asked Questions
What does PSLE Chinese cover?
▼
PSLE Chinese spans writing, language use and comprehension, listening and oral. It is a Mother Tongue subject and counts toward the four-subject PSLE Score.
Should my child take Higher Chinese?
▼
Higher Mother Tongue is used for IP and SAP-school admissions. It is not part of the PSLE Score itself, but a strong result can count toward certain secondary-school placements.
How can PSLE Chinese improve fastest?
▼
Sustained Chinese reading between practice sessions — vocabulary and comprehension respond more to consistent exposure than to lesson hours alone.

Start PSLE Chinese Tuition Early Enough to Lift Composition
Composition is the slowest-moving section to improve, so the earlier the start the better. Mid-P5 booking gives a full 12 to 14 month arc through PSLE.
PSLE Chinese tutors and Higher Chinese specialists are a smaller pool than English or Math. Booking by April or May of P5 is the practical lead time for SAP-track families.
