What Changes When the SEC Replaces the O-Level

A G3 SEC subject is equivalent to the O-Level standard. Under Full Subject-Based Banding each subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3, so one student can sit different subjects at different levels. What changes is the certificate, the syllabus codes, the exam calendar and the admission rules.

  1. October to November 2026The final GCE O-LevelSat by students in Sec 4 in 2026.
  2. September 2027First SEC papers: English and Mother TongueThe written language papers come first.
  3. October to November 2027The other SEC subjectsEach at the level your child takes it: G1, G2 or G3.
  4. January 2028SEC results
  5. 2028 PSENew admission rulesJC: an L1R4 of 16 points or below, every counted subject at G3. Polytechnic: ELR2B2 with one G2 subject allowed, and the net cut-off moves from 26 to 22 points.

SEC G3 syllabus codes, subject by subject

Each subject is sat as an O-Level for the last time in 2026, then at G3 under a K code. Older O-Level papers stay useful practice where the topics match.

How O-Level and SEC grades turn into points

JC admission adds English and the best relevant subjects. Fewer points is better. From the 2028 PSE, JC needs an L1R4 of 16 or below, every subject at G3.

  2. A22 points
  3. B33 points
  4. B44 points
  5. C55 points

How Tuition Should Change for the First SEC Cohort

For students sitting the SEC, from the first cohort in 2027 onward, the tuition plan shifts in four ways:

Teach to the K Code Your Child Sits

Lessons follow the SEC syllabus for each subject code. Older O-Level papers stay useful where the topics match, since a G3 subject is set at the O-Level standard.

Topics covered
  • K310 Mathematics and K341 Additional Mathematics
  • K323 Physics, K324 Chemistry and K325 Biology
  • K326 to K328 Combined Science
  • K300 English, K320 Chinese and K355 Higher Chinese
  • The school's scheme of work and weighted assessments

Work Back From September for Languages

The language papers come first in the SEC calendar, so language revision runs on its own, earlier timeline.

Topics covered
  • English written papers in September
  • Mother Tongue written papers in September
  • Other subjects paced to October and November
  • Results in January

Aim Each Subject at the Level That Counts

The route your child is aiming for, JC or polytechnic, decides which subjects need the most work, and at which level.

Topics covered
  • JC: an L1R4 of 16 points or below
  • JC: every counted subject at G3
  • Polytechnic: ELR2B2, with one G2 subject allowed
  • Polytechnic: net cut-off from 26 to 22 points

Coach G3 and G2 Subjects Side by Side

Under Full Subject-Based Banding a student can take some subjects at G3 and others at G2. Lessons are pitched at the level each subject is taken.

Topics covered
  • Each subject taught at its own level
  • One tutor across several subjects where the fit works
  • Lower secondary foundations for Sec 1 and Sec 2 students
  • The same hourly rate for home and online lessons

SEC and O-Level Tuition: frequently asked questions

Who is the first SEC cohort?

Students in Sec 3 in 2026. The final GCE O-Level is sat in October and November 2026, and from 2027 Secondary 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) instead. Every later cohort sits the SEC too.

Is SEC G3 the same as the O-Level?

A G3 SEC subject is equivalent to the O-Level standard. What changes is the certificate, which lists each subject at G1, G2 or G3, the syllabus codes, the exam calendar and the admission rules.

How does the SEC change JC and polytechnic admission?

From the 2028 PSE, JC admission uses L1R4, 16 points or below, with every counted subject at G3. Polytechnic admission uses ELR2B2 with one G2 subject allowed, and the net cut-off moves from 26 to 22 points.

Should my child take a subject at G2 or G3?

It depends on the route your child is aiming for. The JC route needs every subject counted in L1R4 at G3, while the polytechnic route through ELR2B2 allows only the second B subject to be at G2. Talk to the school about the options it offers. Tutors then teach each subject at the level it is taken.

How much does SEC tuition cost?

Sec 3 and Sec 4 home tuition runs S$45 to S$95 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. Online lessons cost the same.
