A buyer's guide to tuition for the first Singapore-Cambridge SEC. The 2027 exam year term by term, the subjects that carry L1R4 and ELR2B2, a worked aggregate example, specialist or all-rounder, readiness questions and costs.
Choosing SEC tuition for 2027 starts with one question: which of your child's subjects will be counted for admission, and how far is each from the grade the target route needs. The Sec 4 class of 2027 is the first to sit the Singapore-Cambridge SEC, with English and Mother Tongue written papers in September, every other written paper from October, and results in mid-January 2028. Those results feed the 2028 PSE, where JC needs a gross L1R4 of 16 or below across five G3 subjects and polytechnic needs a net ELR2B2 of 22 or below. Because G3 papers keep the O-Level format and standard, the subject teaching changes little. What changes is the calendar and which grades decide admission, and that is where good tuition aims.
If you already want a one-to-one tutor, our SEC tuition page shows how we match tutors by subject, G level and syllabus code. For Sec 1 to 4 more broadly, see secondary tuition.
The 2027 SEC year, term by term
Term dates are MOE's and exam periods SEAB's. No paper-by-paper 2027 timetable was out on 26 October 2026.

For 2027 Sec 3 students, the SEC comes in 2028. Sec 3 is when A Maths and the upper secondary sciences and humanities start, so tuition should build the topics Sec 4 papers assume, not drill past papers. Our guide to choosing G1, G2 and G3 subject levels covers the level decision.
If your 2027 Sec 4 child takes Higher Mother Tongue and sat Mother Tongue at the end of Sec 3 in 2026, SEAB says that result comes on a GCE O-Level certificate. MOE lets PSE applicants combine results from up to two exam years, so it still counts.

So English and Mother Tongue must peak about a month before the rest, which makes the June holidays matter more. There is no mid-year Mother Tongue result to fall back on, so a weak Mother Tongue needs attention from Term 1.
Which subjects decide admission
Each G3 grade adds its number in points: A1 adds 1, B3 adds 3, C6 adds 6. The two aggregates count five subjects each, but they do not treat the five equally.
Points one counted subject adds for G3 grades A1 to C6, by slot
L1R4 English (L1)1 to 6 pointsJC needs English at A1 to C6
L1R4 R1, R2, R3, R41 to 6 points
ELR2B2 English, R1, R2, B11 to 6 points
ELR2B2 B21 to 2 pointsscored at its G2 equivalent
036
From MOE's 2028 PSE rules for JC, MI and polytechnic. A1 to B3 maps to G2 grade 1 and B4 to C6 to grade 2.
The last row is easy to miss. The fifth poly subject is scored at its G2 value, so a C6 there costs one point more than an A1. Anywhere else it costs five.
JC cut-off, gross L1R4: an average of 3.2 points a subject, between B3 and B4
16
MI cut-off, gross L1R4: an average of B4 across the five
20
Polytechnic Year 1 cut-off, net ELR2B2, after up to 2 CCA bonus points (Nursing 24)
22
Most bonus points off L1R4 for JC and MI, plus 2 for a language elective programme
3
The slots also decide what can be dropped. For JC, R1 must be a humanities subject such as Geography, History, Literature or Combined Humanities, and R2 a mathematics or science. Mother Tongue, Economics, Principles of Accounts and Computing can only fill R4. So a weak humanities grade is hard to hide, while a weak Mother Tongue can go uncounted if it meets MOE's minimum (D7 at G3).

Total
3 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 18
3 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 14
At 18, this student misses the JC bar of 16 and clears MI's 20. For poly, 14 is well inside 22, even before bonus points.
Now look at what tuition would buy. Combined Humanities from C6 to B4 brings L1R4 to 16. So does A Maths from B4 to A2 (it moves into R3 and Science drops to R4), or English from B3 to A1. The humanities is the one locked in, as this student's only humanities subject, yet the same C6 does not touch the poly aggregate at all. So decide the target route before choosing a tutor.

PFP, ELMAB3 12 or below at G2English, Maths or A Maths and three best subjects, all scored at G2 value. A total of 12 is an average of 2.4 a subject, so every subject counts.

The syllabus checkWhich code and level?G3 Maths is K310 and G2 Maths is K210. A tutor who only says "O-Level" may not have looked.
The practice checkWhich papers will you use?G3 and G2 keep the O-Level and N(A) formats, so past papers under the old codes still fit. SEAB lists specimen papers only for revised syllabuses, such as G3 Economics, Business and POA.
The calendar checkWhat is the plan for September?English and Mother Tongue are written about a month before the rest. Ask how the plan changes after the June holidays.
The admissions checkWhich slot does this subject fill?Whether the subject sits in L1, R1, R2 or only R4, and what one grade is worth there.
The banding checkHave you taught this level?G2 and G3 papers differ in demand. Ask for recent teaching at your child's level.
The evidence checkHow will we see progress?Dated school test grades in the target subject, set against the grade the route needs.
What SEC tuition costs in 2027
TSS one-to-one rates for 2027, the same at home or online, from our pricing page:

The G level does not change the rate, but the specialist or all-rounder choice changes the hours. At the full-time Sec 4 rate of S$45 to S$65 an hour, one all-rounder for 2 hours a week costs S$90 to S$130. Two specialists at 1.5 hours each cost S$135 to S$195 a week. A centre instead charges a group class fee, usually by the month or term. Our comparison of tuition centres for 2027 sets out what centres publish.
Common questions
Is SEC tuition different from O-Level tuition?
Mostly in planning, not content. G3 papers keep the O-Level format and standard, but the September language papers and the L1R4 and ELR2B2 rules change what a tutor should prioritise.
Are O-Level past papers still useful for the SEC?
Yes for G3, since the format and standard are unchanged, and N(A) papers do the same job for G2. For revised syllabuses such as G3 Economics, Business and POA, use SEAB's specimen papers as well.
Which subject should my Sec 4 child get tuition for first?
The counted subject furthest from the grade the target route needs. English is counted in every route and is written in September, so it often comes first.
Does Mother Tongue count in L1R4?
Only in R4, the any-subject slot. Higher Mother Tongue can replace English as L1, and MOE uses the better of the two totals. JC also needs a Mother Tongue pass, such as D7 at G3 or grade 5 at G2.
Can a G2 subject count for polytechnic?
Yes, one. The fifth ELR2B2 subject can be at G2, and a G3 grade used there is scored at its G2 value.
When should SEC tuition start?
By Term 1 of Sec 4, or in Sec 3 for subjects that build over two years such as A Maths. By the June holidays it should move to full timed papers.
