JC H2 Mathematics (9758, the syllabus introduced in 2017 and updated subsequently) is the most-taken JC subject and the gateway for nearly every quantitative university course at NUS, NTU and SMU. Engineering, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Data Science, Economics and most Science majors require H2 Math. The format is two papers, each 100 marks. Paper 1 is Pure Math (about 70 percent calculus, vectors, complex numbers, sequences and series).

Paper 2 is split between Pure Math (40 marks) and Statistics (60 marks: probability, discrete and continuous distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression). The dominant grade-determining sections are the multi-part Paper 1 application questions (which combine multiple Pure Math topics in one question) and the Statistics interpretation questions in Paper 2 (which reward precise vocabulary in the conclusion).

Our H2 Math tutors run a structured JC1 to JC2 programme. The JC1 syllabus covers Pure Math foundation (functions, calculus introduction, vectors, complex numbers, sequences) plus the statistics introduction (probability, discrete distributions, normal distribution). The JC2 syllabus then layers more advanced calculus (techniques of integration, applications), vector geometry, statistical inference (sampling, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression). Tutors are NUS, NTU graduates with strong Math majors (often ex-Hwa Chong, ex-RI or ex-NJC themselves), or experienced ex-MOE JC tutors. The grade lift we typically see is from S or U grade in JC1 mid-year to B or A by A-Level prelims, and from B grade in JC1 to A by A-Level for students who start early.

A specific structural feature of the 9758 syllabus that catches many JC1 students by surprise: vectors and complex numbers are introduced in JC1 but the genuinely hard application questions only appear in JC2 prelims and A-Levels. Students who are coasting through JC1 vectors with bookwork-style questions hit a wall at JC2 prelim when the question shifts to intersecting planes, perpendicular distance from a point to a line, or the locus of complex numbers under multiple constraints.

We pre-emptively coach the harder application style from the second half of JC1 onwards, so the JC2 ramp-up does not feel like a fresh subject. The same logic applies to integration. JC1 integration is mostly substitution and partial fractions; JC2 integration adds integration by parts, more elaborate substitutions and the Maclaurin-series-based approximations. Drilling the JC2 integration techniques in the JC1 to JC2 holiday is the cleanest way to enter JC2 ahead rather than behind.

Common JC H2 Math Struggles We Fix

H2 Math marks at the A and B bands are decided on multi-part question handling and statistical interpretation. The patterns we see most often:

✓

Calculus integration techniques (substitution, by parts, partial fractions) are confused under exam pressure.

✓

Vector geometry questions involving lines, planes and intersections lose 6 to 10 marks per Paper 1.

✓

Complex numbers questions involving De Moivre theorem and roots of unity are skipped.

✓

Statistical inference vocabulary (null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, p-value, significance level) is imprecise in conclusions.

✓

Sampling distribution and Central Limit Theorem application questions are confused.

✓

Working-shown discipline collapses on multi-part Paper 1 questions, losing method marks.

These are the gaps our H2 Math tutors fix with structured topical sequencing and weekly past-paper drilling.

Alex Lim - ex-MOE NIE trained secondary and JC Math teacher

Credentials: Bachelor of Science (Applied Maths, Hons)

Specialises In: Math

Track Record: Secondary and JC Maths, IB

A Note from Alex: "I am an ex-MOE and NIE-trained math teacher with over a decade of experience teaching in both the private and the public sector. I started teaching JC H2 Maths more than a decade ago in Meridian Junior College and taught JC Maths and secondary math across various tuition centres over the past 10 years. Now, I am currently teaching at MOE again teaching the IB syllabus for year 5 students. Known to have concise and clear explanations, I usually build a good rapport with students by being genuine and patient. Socratic questioning and Polya model of problem solving are my go-to tools for tackling complex questions. Common mistakes and alternative methods are usually tackled for deeper understanding and learning. I am looking for part-time online assignments which I can do during weekday evenings and weekends (preferred). I charge around $100/hr for classes. Let me know if you have assignments for me. "

What Our Parents Say

"I was getting U grade in H2 Math at end of JC1 and was seriously considering dropping to H1. The tutor restarted vectors and integration from scratch. Final A-Level H2 Math was B, which got me into NUS Engineering."

- Joshua

JC2 student from Bishan

"My daughter struggled with statistical inference for the entire JC2 first half. The tutor walked through 30 past hypothesis-testing questions and her conclusions became sharp and precise. Final A-Level was A."

- Mrs. Chen

Parent from Bukit Timah

H2 Mathematics: Frequently Asked Questions

What does H2 Math (9758) cover?

â–¼

Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics, functions, calculus, vectors, complex numbers, sequences and series, differential equations. Paper 2 adds Statistics: probability, distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression.

Why is the JC1-to-JC2 jump so steep?

â–¼

JC2 layers integration techniques, differential equations, vector planes and the full statistics-inference framework on top of JC1 foundations, a large step in a short time.

What decides an A in H2 Math?

â–¼

The integrated multi-part Paper 1 question and precise, context-referenced statistics conclusions, both rewarding full timed past-paper practice.
