IB Tuition by subject

Each IB subject has its own page, with that course's SL and HL content, where marks are lost and the tutor rates. IB Maths, covering Analysis and approaches and Applications and interpretation, has its own page too.

When IB students start to need help

The DP asks a lot at once: six subjects, three core components and internal assessments on top of class tests. These are the points where parents usually notice strain.

An HL subject that felt fine in DP1 becomes the weakest grade once the harder HL-only content arrives.

Internal assessment drafts, the extended essay and the TOK essay all fall in the same few months, and class work slips while they get done.

A student who came from a local school or from IGCSE finds IB command terms, such as evaluate or discuss, need a different kind of answer.

The predicted grades for university applications come in lower than hoped, because DP1 tests were treated as practice.

1 more

Language acquisition or the language A course drags the total down, because written work is marked on criteria the student has never read.

Most of this is about planning and knowing the marking criteria, which a tutor who has taught the course can help with from DP1.

What IB tuition covers, across the Diploma

The IB sets the courses and the assessment, and your child's school sets the order and the internal deadlines. A tutor works inside that plan for each subject you book.

Higher level subjects

HL and SL share the same grade descriptors, but HL expects a greater body of knowledge and skill, so HL subjects usually take most of the tuition time.

Topics covered
  • Pacing the extra HL-only content through DP1 and DP2
  • Past-paper practice in the style of each HL paper
  • Reading the subject's grade descriptors and markbands
  • Long-answer questions that need evaluation, not only recall
  • Choosing which subject to drop to SL if the load is too high, with the school

Standard level subjects

SL subjects earn the same 7 points as HL. Lifting one SL grade can move the total as much as an HL grade.

Topics covered
  • Closing gaps from before the DP, such as algebra for SL Maths or essay structure for an SL humanities subject
  • Short, regular practice so SL work is not left to the end
  • Exam technique for structured and data-response questions
  • Knowing what each assessment component is worth
  • Revision timetables that give SL subjects fair time

Internal assessment

Most IB courses include work marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. The student must do the work, and a tutor helps with planning, method and the criteria.

Topics covered
  • Choosing a focused, workable research question
  • Reading the assessment criteria before starting
  • Investigations in mathematics
  • Laboratory work in the sciences
  • Oral work in languages
  • Fieldwork write-ups in geography
  • Planning drafts around the school's deadlines

The DP core

Theory of knowledge and the extended essay can add up to 3 points together, and CAS must be completed for the diploma to be awarded.

Topics covered
  • TOK: how we know what we claim to know, and building an argument with examples
  • The extended essay: an independent piece of research that ends in a 4,000-word paper
  • Scoping an extended essay topic in a subject your child enjoys
  • Keeping TOK and the extended essay on schedule alongside six subjects
  • CAS: activities across creativity, activity and service, tracked over the programme

How the IB Diploma adds up to 45 points

The diploma total is the sum of six subject grades and the core points. This is how IBO describes each part.

The diploma is awarded at 24 points or more, subject to minimum performance conditions and completion of the core. IBO also says it will deliver some DP examinations digitally, starting with a small number of subjects in 2026, so ask the school which format your child's papers will use.

QuestionFor the IB Diploma
Which tutor suits the IB?Choose a tutor who has taught the current IBO guide for that subject at the right level, SL or HL, and who knows its internal assessment. A tutor strong in A-Level or O-Level content may not know IB command terms or markbands. The profiles we send show which IB subjects and levels each tutor has taught, with qualifications and experience.
What does it cost?IB is in the IB and IGCSE band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. One subject at four 1.5-hour lessons a month with a full-time tutor comes to S$390 to S$540. Two subjects at that pace with full-time tutors come to S$780 to S$1080 a month.
How does it start?Tell us the school, DP1 or DP2, each subject with its level, and the latest grades. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so you can add a second subject before exams or stop one after it improves. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

IB Tuition: a guide for parents

The IB Diploma Programme is taught to students aged 16 to 19, and in Singapore it runs across two school years, usually called DP1 and DP2. Each student takes one subject from each of six groups: studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and the arts. The arts can be swapped for a second sciences, individuals and societies or languages subject. Three or four subjects are taken at higher level and the rest at standard level.

Read the full guide

On top of the six subjects sits the DP core: theory of knowledge, the extended essay, and creativity, activity, service. It is a broad load, and most families who look for IB help want a tutor for one or two subjects, not all six.

An IB tutor works to the IBO subject guide your child's school teaches, and to the way IB marks work. Most courses end in written examinations, and most also have internal assessment marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB, such as investigations in mathematics, laboratory work in the sciences, oral work in languages or fieldwork in geography. A good tutor helps your child plan these pieces early, so they do not pile up in DP2 alongside revision. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online. The subject pages below set out what each IB course covers, and the tables further down explain how points are scored and how the cost works if you book for more than one subject.

Here is how a DP2 total can be built. Say a student takes three HL subjects and three SL subjects and is predicted 6, 6 and 5 at HL and 5, 5 and 4 at SL. That is 31 subject points. Theory of knowledge and the extended essay together add up to 3 more, and if they earn 2, the total is 33.

Lifting the SL 4 to a 5 is worth exactly as much as lifting an HL 6 to a 7, because IBO awards the same points at both levels. A tutor helps the family see this before choosing where tuition time goes. Often the quickest gain is the weakest SL subject, where the gaps are smaller, while the HL subjects get steady weekly practice.

IB Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is the IB Diploma scored?

Each of the six subjects is graded from 7 down to 1. Theory of knowledge and the extended essay are graded separately and together can add up to 3 points. That makes 45 the highest possible total. The diploma is awarded at 24 points or more, subject to minimum performance conditions and completing all three parts of the core. CAS earns no points, but it is required.

Should my child get help in one IB subject or several?

Start with the subject where the grade is furthest from the target, usually an HL subject. Because SL and HL subjects earn the same points, a weak SL grade can be worth fixing too. Some families book two tutors, one for each subject, so each lesson goes to a specialist. Others start with one subject and add a second before DP2 exams.

Can a tutor help with the extended essay or internal assessment?

Yes, within the rules. The work must be your child's own, and the school oversees it. A tutor can explain the assessment criteria, help narrow a research question, check that the method is sound, and teach how to structure an argument. A tutor should not write or rewrite any part of the submitted work.

What is the difference between SL and HL?

IBO says standard level subjects take 150 teaching hours and higher level subjects 240. Both are marked against the same grade descriptors and earn the same points, but HL covers more content and expects more depth. Each student takes three or four subjects at HL. The subject pages linked above show what HL adds for each course.

How much does IB tuition cost?

IB Diploma subjects are in our IB and IGCSE rate band. For each IB subject, expect S$45 to S$60 an hour from an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 from a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 from an ex-MOE teacher. Each subject is booked separately, so two subjects means two lessons a week, at each tutor's own rate.
