IB Chemistry HL is the prerequisite for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences and Chemical Engineering at most international universities, and is recognised by NUS and NTU as the IB equivalent of H2 Chemistry. The syllabus covers stoichiometric relationships, atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding and structure, energetics and thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox processes, organic chemistry, measurement and data processing. HL students cover additional depth across these topics plus an Option topic (Materials, Biochemistry, Energy, or Medicinal Chemistry). Assessment is three external papers (Paper 1 multiple-choice, Paper 2 short-answer and extended-response, Paper 3 data and option questions) plus the Internal Assessment (10-page individual investigation worth 20 percent of the final grade).
Our IB Chemistry HL tutors run a structured DP1 to DP2 programme. The DP1 syllabus covers stoichiometric, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases (HL depth). The DP2 syllabus then layers redox, organic chemistry advanced topics, the Option topic, and the IA execution. Tutors are NUS or NTU graduates with strong Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related majors, ex-IB DP students themselves (often ex-UWCSEA, ex-SJI International), or PhD holders with IB teaching experience.
The IB Chemistry HL IA is one of the most demanding internal assessments in the IB Diploma Programme, partly because the chemistry-specific safety constraints limit what students can investigate at home. Common topic mistakes include picking an investigation that requires unsafe reagents, an outcome that is not quantitatively measurable, or a research question too vague to operationalise.
Our tutors steer students toward IA topics that satisfy the rubric while staying inside school-lab safety limits: kinetics studies via colorimetry, equilibrium constant determination via titration, electrochemistry via standard electrode potentials, or food chemistry investigations using widely available reagents. We coach the methodology section to include uncertainty propagation, the analysis section to include error bars and statistical comparison, and the evaluation section to identify systematic and random error sources separately.
Students who follow this cadence land in the top quartile of IA marks, which is the cleanest single lever for the final HL grade.
Common IB Chemistry HL Struggles We Fix
IB Chemistry HL marks at the 6 and 7 grade levels are decided on Paper 2 extended-response and the Internal Assessment. The patterns we see most often:
Equilibrium and Ka, Kb, Kw calculations break down on multi-step ICE-table questions.
Organic chemistry mechanisms (electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution) are confused under exam pressure.
Paper 3 data analysis questions are unfamiliar in style.
Internal Assessment investigation design lacks a clear research question or sufficient mathematical content.
Option topic depth is undertaught at the home school.
Extended-response answers are conceptually correct but use wrong vocabulary, losing marks to keyword penalties.
These are the gaps our IB Chemistry HL tutors fix with structured DP1 to DP2 sequencing and dedicated IA coaching.
IB Chemistry HL Programme Structure
A full-syllabus programme spanning DP1 and DP2:
1. Physical Chemistry (foundation)
The largest topic group, foundational for HL depth.
- Stoichiometric relationships
- Atomic structure (electron configuration, ionisation energy)
- Periodicity (trends across and down)
- Chemical bonding and structure (Lewis, VSEPR, MO theory)
- Energetics and thermochemistry (Hess law, Born-Haber cycles)
- Chemical kinetics and equilibrium (HL depth)
2. Acids, Bases, Redox
High-stakes Paper 2 question block.
- Acid-base theories (Bronsted, Lewis)
- pH calculations and buffer solutions
- Salt hydrolysis and titration curves
- Redox reactions and electrode potentials
- Electrolysis (HL applications)
- Standard cell potentials and Gibbs energy link
3. Organic Chemistry (HL emphasis)
The hardest topic block at HL.
- Functional groups and nomenclature
- Reaction mechanisms (SN1, SN2, electrophilic addition)
- Stereochemistry (chirality, optical activity)
- Spectroscopy (mass spec, IR, NMR)
- Polymers (addition, condensation)
- Multi-step synthesis design
4. Option Topic and IA
The DP2 capstone components.
- Option topic (Materials, Biochemistry, Energy, or Medicinal Chemistry)
- IA research question design
- Variable selection and control
- Data collection and analysis
- Evaluation and improvements
- IA mathematical content and rubric criteria
Why Choose Us for Chemistry HL?
IB DP-Specialist Tutors
Our IB Chemistry HL tutors are ex-IB DP students themselves and know the IB curriculum, marking criteria and IA expectations from personal experience.
Dedicated IA Coaching
The Internal Assessment is 20 percent of the final grade. We coach research question design, mathematical content depth, and the rubric criteria across DP1 and DP2.
Option Topic Coverage
The Option topic (40 percent of Paper 3) is often undertaught at the home school. We have specialists for each of the four common options.

What Our Parents Say
"Organic chemistry was killing me throughout DP1. The tutor rebuilt mechanisms from electron flow and from there synthesis questions made sense. Final IB Chemistry HL grade 7. Got into NUS Medicine."
- Marcus
DP2 student at SJI International
"My IA was going nowhere. The tutor helped me redesign the research question and the mathematical analysis. Final IA score was 21 out of 24. Final IB grade 7."
- Hannah
