A-Math from 2027: the SEC G3 Additional Mathematics (K341) papers
From 2027, G3 Additional Mathematics (K341) takes over from O-Level A-Math (4049). It covers Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Calculus, and it assumes the G3 Mathematics content, so a gap in E-Math shows up again here. Students in Sec 4 in 2026 sit the final O-Level paper.

What A-Math covers, and when it starts
A-Math (SEAB syllabus 4049) is the deeper O-Level mathematics subject, examined in two papers of 90 marks each. Both papers can test any part of the syllabus: algebra (including exponentials and logarithms), geometry and trigonometry, and calculus. Most Singapore secondary schools start 4049 in Sec 3 Term 2, by which point students who skipped E-Math fundamentals (factor and remainder theorem, surds, indices) are already behind. Why A-Math matters for JC, and where the marks go
A-Math grades matter for JC entry. From the 2028 PSE, JC admission uses L1R4 (at most 16, every counted subject at G3), and A-Math can count as the Maths subject. Lessons focus on specific skills: the differentiation product/quotient/chain-rule chains, the integration substitution + by-parts patterns, the R-formula in trigonometric range problems, and the binomial-theorem term-extraction format. We practise these on past exam papers and school-style prelim questions rather than generic textbook exercises, because the SEAB rounds wording and the mark-scheme verbs (state vs show vs deduce vs prove) reward students who have seen real prelim phrasing. Outcomes vary by start grade and study time. Parents can ask the tutor for updates at any time.
Sec 4: the prelim run-up
For Sec 4 students aiming at JC entry, A-Math can count toward the L1R4 score used in the PSE from 2028. In the September to October prelim window, lessons focus on the calculus application question on Paper 2, which combines integration, differentiation and coordinate geometry in one multi-part question, and students work through past-paper variations of this question family. Trigonometric identity proofs and the R-formula are the second focus area. Additional Mathematics Tuition: frequently asked questions
Is A-Math harder than E-Math?
Yes. Additional Mathematics (SEAB 4049) adds calculus, advanced trigonometric identities and more abstract algebra on top of E-Math, and is sat as a separate subject. Most students find the calculus application questions and the binomial theorem the steepest part.
When should A-Math tuition start?
Sec 3, when the 4049 syllabus begins. Sec 3 carries the larger content load, the calculus introduction and trigonometric identities, and that content is examined in full at O-Level, so starting only in Sec 4 means catching up rather than getting ahead.
What A-Math grade is needed for the JC Science track?
A-Math can count as the Maths subject (R2) in the L1R4 score for JC admission from 2028, and every subject counts equally. Moving from a B3 to an A1 can change posting outcomes at the tighter JC cut-offs, which is why it is the grade most JC-bound students focus on.
Can a student failing A-Math in Sec 3 still recover?
Often, if the gap is foundational algebra rather than ability. A recovery from the D7 range to an A2 over Sec 4 is realistic with focused, syllabus-mapped work. A jump straight to A1 from a fail is harder and worth being realistic about.
How much does Additional Mathematics Tuition Singapore cost?
