Weak or failed A-Level results still leave polytechnic, university and work routes open. What S and U grades mean, how to retake as a SEAB private candidate, what it costs, the science practical rule, and why NUS and NTU want GP and three H2 subjects from one sitting.
If you fail an A-Level subject in Singapore, you get an S (sub-pass) or U (ungraded) for that subject, and you still receive an A-Level certificate as long as at least one H1 or H2 subject is graded E or better. Polytechnics run their own admissions for A-Level holders, some into 2 or 2.5-year diplomas, universities admit on open competition, and you can retake as a SEAB private candidate in the next exam year. In 2026, private candidate registration ran from 7 to 20 April, and fees for a Singapore Citizen were S$125 for General Paper and S$180 for each H2 subject. The 2026 results are tentatively due between 19 and 23 February 2027.

Before anyone talks about retaking, mark each subject on the slip against SEAB's grade list.

Three questions decide what happens next. Did you pass GP? Did you pass all three H2 subjects you need for your course? Is the Mother Tongue requirement met? NTU lists an S grade or higher in H1 Mother Tongue as one way to meet it, so an S there is less serious than it looks.
Shorter diplomaPolytechnic with A-Level resultsPolytechnics run direct admissions for A-Level holders. Temasek Polytechnic offers 2 and 2.5-year diplomas, with grades from up to two sittings.
3-year diplomaPolytechnic with O-Level resultsTemasek Polytechnic says JC students and A-Level holders can apply through the JAE with O-Level results.
Open competitionUniversity anywayUniversities admit on merit among eligible applicants. NUS also runs aptitude-based admissions.
One more yearRetake as a private candidateRegister with SEAB in April, sit in October and November, and apply with the new results.
Study laterWork firstMOE notes that adults can upskill later through heavily subsidised Continuing Education and Training.
ITE is not a usual route for A-Level holders. Overseas universities and private institutions set their own entry rules, so check each one directly.
Watch the JAE timing. The 2027 JAE opens on O-Level results day, tentatively 13 to 15 January 2027, and runs for six days, a month before A-Level results. A JC2 student who expects weak results must choose a 3-year diploma before seeing them. Temasek Polytechnic's A-Level window in 2026 ran from 24 to 31 August instead. Windows differ, so check each polytechnic after results day.
How NUS, NTU and SMU read a second sitting
Get this right before paying for a retake. The table keeps to what each admissions page states.
University
What its page says about sittings
Project Work for private candidates
NUS
For 2025 and later sitters, the score uses "GP and three H2 content-based subjects taken in the same sitting". A Mother Tongue result from another sitting can be submitted.
Not required, per the universities' joint FAQ
NTU
"3 H2 content-based subjects and General Paper (GP) taken in the same sitting". Mother Tongue from a separate sitting is acceptable.
Not required, per the same FAQ
SMU
For 2025 and later sitters, the page lists 3 H2 subjects and GP without a sitting rule. It encourages applicants unlikely to get in to consider retaking as private candidates.
Not required, per the same FAQ
None of the three pages says it will pick your "best" or "latest" sitting for you, so email the admissions office with your exact grades before you register. Temasek Polytechnic is more flexible and accepts grades from up to two sittings.
What a full retake costs at 2026 rates
SEAB charges per subject, by citizenship at registration, GST included. These are 2026 fees, and 2027 fees are not out yet.

For a citizen, 125 + 180 + 180 + 180 = S$665. Every Cambridge H2 subject costs the same, so swapping Economics for Physics or History does not change the total.
Edusave and PSEA funds cannot be used. MOE has said private candidates who need financial support can approach their Social Service Office or community organisations. Lessons and practical courses are extra.

You must not be enrolled in a school. Students in government, government-aided, independent or specialised schools cannot register privately, and SEAB cancels such registrations without a refund.
The science practical has to be sat again. To enter an H2 science with a practical paper, you must have sat that subject before or be attending a science practical course that ends before your practical date. Former JC students who sat the subject qualify. SEAB then requires you to sit every registered paper "regardless if you have sat for those papers in previous years". No practical mark carries over, so a resit of H2 Chemistry, Physics or Biology includes Paper 4 again, weeks before the written papers.
Plan for the revised science syllabuses. SEAB's 2027 list for private candidates shows only the revised H2 sciences: Chemistry 9476, Biology 9477 and Physics 9478. Prepare from the 2027 syllabus document, not old JC notes alone.
Small subjects can be cancelled. SEAB may not run a subject with fewer than 20 registered candidates, and refunds you if you then drop it. H2 Further Mathematics must be taken with H2 Mathematics.
Mother Tongue has two chances. You can sit the written papers mid-year, year-end or both, and the better result goes on your certificate. Orals and listening comprehension cannot be resat.
Registering, step by step
1Confirm what the retake must containEmail the university with your grades and ask what one sitting must contain for your course.
2Check you are not a school candidateIf you have left JC, you can register.
3Watch for SEAB's 2027 bookletRead its subject list and the clash rules in its annex.
4Register and pay in the same windowUse the Candidates Portal. Unpaid entries are not registered.
5Declare the practical requirementA false declaration cancels the subject without a refund.
6Download your entry proofIn 2026, year-end entry proofs came out on 25 June.
Waiting on a university offer? SEAB says to register anyway. If a place comes through, you can withdraw and claim a refund, minus subjects already sat. In 2026 the deadline was 18 June, and the acceptance letter had to be dated after your registration.
The retake year on one calendar
19 to 23 Feb 20272026 A-Level resultsTentative. Appeals open shortly after, through school for school candidates.
February to March 2027University applicationsApply with the results you have. In the 2026 cycle, SMU's A-Level window closed on 19 March. A retake is a backup, not a reason to skip applying.
April 2027 (expected)SEAB private candidate registration2026 ran from 7 to 20 April. Dates for 2027 are not out yet.
Early June 2027 (expected)Mid-year Mother Tongue written paperOnly if you need H1 Mother Tongue. In 2026 it was 2 June.
October 2027 (expected)Science practicalsIn 2026, Chemistry, Physics and Biology practicals ran on 14, 19 and 22 October.
November 2027 (expected)Written papersIn 2026, GP was on 2 and 4 November, and the last paper on 27 November.
February 2028 (expected)Retake resultsYou then apply to university for the 2028 intake.
A retake pushes university entry back by a full year. That year is the real price of a resit, more than the fees.
National Service and a retake year
For male students, check NS first. CMPB says deferment is not granted to pursue a qualification equal to or below one you already hold, and that disruption from full-time NS is not granted for pre-university qualifications. The government's LifeSG guide for parents adds that a son who failed his pre-university studies can ask for further deferment to repeat them full-time, granted case by case. Do not assume NS will wait. Ask CMPB with your results before paying for a full-time retake course.
Is a retake worth a year?
A resit tends to pay off when three things are true. The course you want is out of reach with your current grades. You know why the first sitting went wrong. And you can study steadily for eight months without a school timetable.
If several subjects fell short for reasons you cannot name, a polytechnic diploma may be a better use of the year. NUS, for one, has a separate admissions route for polytechnic diploma holders. Our sister guide covers failing the SEC or O-Level, and the SEC and O-Level private candidate guide covers that exam's own rules.
Common questions
Do you still get an A-Level certificate if you fail some subjects?
Yes. SEAB issues the certificate if you get E or better in at least one H1 or H2 subject. The failed subjects appear as S or Ungraded.
Is an S grade a pass?
No. SEAB says both S and Ungraded mean the candidate did not pass that subject. An S in H1 Mother Tongue still meets NTU's Mother Tongue requirement, though.
Can I retake the A-Levels in my JC?
MOE does not encourage students who have passed the A-Level to retake it in school. The usual route is to sit as a SEAB private candidate.
Do I have to redo the H2 science practical?
Yes. Private candidates must sit every paper of each registered subject, including Paper 4, even if they sat it before.
Will NUS take my best grade for each subject across two sittings?
Its page does not say that. NUS uses GP and three H2 subjects from the same sitting, and accepts Mother Tongue from another sitting. Ask NUS about your case before you register.
Do private candidates need a Project Work pass for university?
No. The universities' joint FAQ says private candidates are not subject to the Project Work pass requirement. Private candidates cannot take Project Work anyway.
How much does it cost to retake the A-Levels?
At 2026 SEAB rates, GP plus three H2 subjects comes to S$665 for a Singapore Citizen, S$1,530 for a PR and S$1,865 for an international candidate. Tuition and practical courses are extra.
