Each subject gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8. The four ALs add up to the PSLE score, from 4 to 32.

PSLE Mathematics from 2026: the two papers
Paper 1 is done without a calculator, so mental arithmetic and clean working carry real marks. A tutor builds that speed in P5 and checks it with timed Paper 1 practice in P6.

The heuristics tutors coach by name
The MOE-rewarded heuristics are explicit: model drawing (units and parts), working backwards, guess-and-check, supposition, before-and-after, and equal-quantity manipulation. Tutors coach these by name because the PSLE marking scheme rewards students who write the heuristic step shown clearly, method marks are bankable even when the final answer is wrong. A common P5-P6 focus is the Paper 2 multi-step problem sum: students at the AL3-AL5 boundary typically lose marks not from concept gaps but from skipping the model-drawing setup and leaping to algebra prematurely. We practise on past PSLE papers and school-style prelim questions. Outcomes vary by start grade and study time. Parents can ask the tutor for updates at any time.

When to start: the P3 to P4 shift
A note on timing: many gaps first show at P3 to P4, when Math moves from straight computation to multi-step word problems. Working on the gap early leaves more time before the PSLE than a P6 mid-year scramble does. Each school sets its own papers, so the tutor sets the band target from your child's own results. Our tutors run a diagnostic in the first lesson against recent PSLE papers and the student's school topical-test track record to set the band target accurately.
What the MOE primary Math syllabus covers
One Achievement Level band matters because secondary school cut-offs are set as PSLE Score totals, so one band in one subject changes the total by one point. The MOE primary Math curriculum covers number sense, four operations, fractions, decimals, percentage, ratio, area and volume, geometry, and the heuristic-based word problems that dominate Paper 2. Our primary Math home tutors map weekly lessons to the school topical schedule so each lesson reinforces the next CA / WA test rather than running on a parallel track.

When should my child start primary math tuition?
At the first persistent sign of a gap, rather than waiting for P6. A weak spot in P3 to P5 quietly breaks the topics that build on it, so closing it early can make the PSLE year less stressful. Starting in P5 rather than mid-P6 leaves more time before the exam.
Is home tuition or a tuition centre better for primary maths?
For a specific gap, careless-mark habits, or a child who disengages in a group, 1-to-1 home tuition is usually more effective because the tutor works only on your child's weak points at their pace. A centre can suit a broadly-coping child who benefits from structure and peers.
