IGCSE Mathematics is taken by international school students in Singapore at the end of Year 11 (equivalent to Sec 4 in the local system) and is the prerequisite for IB Diploma Programme Mathematics, A-Level Mathematics or Singapore JC H1/H2 Math depending on post-IGCSE pathway. The two dominant exam boards in Singapore are Cambridge IGCSE (syllabus 0580 for Mathematics, Extended tier) and Edexcel International GCSE (Specification 4MA1, Higher tier). The Cambridge 0580 Extended format is two papers (Paper 2 short questions, Paper 4 longer structured questions) totalling 200 marks.

The Edexcel IGCSE Math Higher tier format is also two papers (Paper 1H and Paper 2H) totalling 200 marks. The syllabi cover number, algebra, geometry, mensuration, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability. The A* grade boundary at Cambridge 0580 sits around 89 percent, which is genuinely demanding and rewards consistent precision across both papers.

Our IGCSE Math tutors run a structured Year 10 to Year 11 programme. The Year 10 syllabus covers number, algebra foundations, geometry, mensuration and trigonometry introduction. The Year 11 syllabus then layers calculus introduction (in Edexcel and the Cambridge 0580 calculus extension), statistics, probability, vectors and the more advanced application questions. Tutors are NUS or NTU graduates with strong Math majors, often ex-IGCSE students themselves at UWCSEA, Tanglin Trust, SJI International or Australian International School, or ex-MOE specialists with international school tutoring experience.

A pathway-aware coaching note: Year 11 students heading toward IB Math AA HL after IGCSE need a noticeably stronger algebraic foundation than students heading to A-Level Math or the local JC pathway. Specifically, IB Math AA HL expects rapid manipulation of rational functions, partial fractions, logarithms and trigonometric identities, all introduced in IGCSE but easy to coast through at the IGCSE A grade boundary.

Our IGCSE tutors who know the IB pathway pre-emptively deepen the algebra and trigonometry in the second half of Year 11, so that the DP1 ramp-up is gentler. For students heading to A-Level Math instead, the priority is the Cambridge 0580 calculus extension topics and the Year 11 statistics depth that map directly onto the Cambridge A-Level Math syllabus. Knowing the post-IGCSE destination shapes the lesson rigour and is the single piece of information we ask for first.

Common IGCSE Math Struggles We Fix

IGCSE Math marks at the A and A* grade levels are decided on Paper 4 (or Paper 2H Edexcel) longer questions and exam technique. The patterns we see most often:

Strong on Paper 2 short questions but loses marks on Paper 4 multi-step questions because of working-shown discipline.

Trigonometry application (especially 3D problems and bearings) is the highest-loss topic.

Algebraic manipulation errors compound under exam time pressure on Paper 4.

Statistics interpretation (cumulative frequency, box plots, histograms with unequal class widths) is rushed or misread.

Vectors questions in Paper 4 are skipped because the student has not been drilled on vector geometry.

Calculus questions (in Edexcel and Cambridge 0580 extension) confuse differentiation rules under multi-step pressure.

These are the gaps our IGCSE Math tutors fix with structured Year 10 to Year 11 sequencing and weekly past-paper drilling.

IGCSE Math Programme Structure

A Cambridge 0580 Extended or Edexcel IGCSE Math syllabus-aligned programme:

1. Number and Algebra

Foundational topics for the rest of the syllabus.

  • Number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Standard form and surds
  • Algebraic manipulation and factorisation
  • Solving equations (linear, quadratic, simultaneous)
  • Inequalities and number lines
  • Functions, sequences and indices

2. Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry

High-mark topic group at IGCSE.

  • Properties of shapes (triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons)
  • Circle theorems
  • Mensuration (area, perimeter, surface area, volume)
  • Trigonometry basics (SOH-CAH-TOA)
  • Sine rule and cosine rule
  • 3D trigonometry problems
  • Coordinate geometry

3. Statistics, Probability, Vectors

The Year 11 high-frequency topics.

  • Mean, median, mode (ungrouped and grouped)
  • Cumulative frequency and quartiles
  • Histograms with unequal class widths
  • Probability (independent, dependent events, tree diagrams)
  • Set notation and Venn diagrams
  • Vector operations and geometry

4. Calculus and Application

Cambridge 0580 extension or Edexcel content.

  • Differentiation introduction
  • Application of differentiation (gradients, stationary points)
  • Application questions on Paper 4 / Paper 2H
  • Past-paper drilling from 2018 onwards
  • A* grade boundary preparation

Why Choose Us for Mathematics?

IGCSE-Specialist Tutors

Our IGCSE Math tutors teach Cambridge 0580 Extended or Edexcel IGCSE Math directly, with familiarity with the recent past-paper trends and the A* grade boundary.

Year 10 to Year 11 Continuity

IGCSE Math Year 11 papers assume the Year 10 algebra and geometry foundations. We typically retain the same tutor across both years for continuity.

Pathway-Aware Coaching

We will ask whether your child is heading to IB DP, A-Level or local JC after IGCSE, and shape the lesson rigour accordingly. Students heading to IB Math AA HL need a stronger algebra foundation than students heading to A-Level Math.

What Our Parents Say

"My son was at A grade in Year 10 mid-year and we wanted A* for the IB transition. The tutor focused on Paper 4 working-shown discipline and trigonometry. Final IGCSE Math was A*."

- Mrs. Henderson

Parent at Tanglin Trust

"Vectors confused me throughout Year 11. The tutor walked me through 20 past-paper vector questions and the topic clicked. A* in IGCSE Math."

- Aarav

Year 11 student at UWCSEA
