IGCSE Tuition by subject

Each IGCSE subject has its own page, with the Cambridge syllabus code, the papers, the common mistakes and the tutor rates.

Where IGCSE students run into trouble

IGCSE students sit many separate Cambridge exams, often in one series. These are the signs parents tend to see in Year 10 and Year 11.

Your child is entered for Core in Maths or a science but is working at a level where Extended would allow a higher grade.

School tests are on track, but past Cambridge papers feel different, because the command words and mark schemes are stricter.

Practical or alternative-to-practical papers lose marks on method, tables and units rather than on content.

Revision for several subjects is left to the last term, so the weakest one gets no time.

1 more

A student who moved from a local or overseas school is missing content the syllabus assumes, such as algebra or essay writing.

A tutor can fix most of these subject by subject, starting with the tier and the paper format.

What IGCSE tuition covers

Cambridge sets the syllabus content and the papers. The school chooses the subjects, the tier and the exam series. A tutor works inside those choices.

Mathematics

IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has Core and Extended routes, and Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate IGCSE for strong students.

Topics covered
  • Number, algebra and graphs
  • Geometry, mensuration and trigonometry
  • Vectors, probability and statistics
  • Non-calculator methods for the papers that ban calculators
  • Extended topics such as functions and differentiation

The sciences

The sciences have Core and Extended routes. In Chemistry 0620, every candidate also sits Paper 5, a practical test, or Paper 6, an alternative to practical.

Topics covered
  • Core content and the Supplement content that Extended adds
  • Planning experiments and recording results
  • Tables, graphs and units in practical answers
  • Calculations in Chemistry and Physics
  • Structured questions using the syllabus's command words

English and Chinese

Language subjects test reading, writing and, in some syllabuses, speaking, so the syllabus code matters more than the tier.

Topics covered
  • First language versus second or foreign language syllabuses
  • Reading comprehension and summary
  • Directed and composition writing
  • Oral or speaking components where the syllabus has them
  • Timing across long papers

Economics and other subjects

IGCSE Economics 0455 has one route for everyone, with two papers and grades A* to G. Tutors are also available for the other IGCSE subjects your child takes.

Topics covered
  • Definitions and diagrams in Economics
  • Data and case-based questions
  • Evaluation in longer answers
  • Past papers from recent June and November series
  • A revision plan across all IGCSE subjects

Core, Extended or one route: three IGCSE subjects compared

Whether a subject has tiers, and what each tier can award, depends on the syllabus. These three Cambridge syllabuses show the range.

Cambridge recommends Core for students expected to get a grade D or below and Extended for those expected to get a C or above. A Core candidate cannot get higher than a C, so the entry is worth discussing with the school during Year 10.

QuestionFor IGCSE
Which tutor suits IGCSE?Choose a tutor who has taught the Cambridge syllabus code your child sits, at the right tier, and who knows its papers and mark schemes. The local O-Level and SEC syllabuses overlap with some IGCSE subjects but are not the same. Every profile shows the tutor's qualifications, experience and the syllabuses taught.
What does it cost?Every IGCSE subject sits in the IB and IGCSE band, at S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. For one subject, a month of four 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor is S$390 to S$540. Two subjects a week at that length with full-time tutors come to S$780 to S$1080 a month.
How does it start?Tell us the school, Year 10 or Year 11, the subjects with their syllabus codes and tiers, and the exam series. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so lessons can pause for the school's holidays and pick up before the exam series. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

IGCSE Tuition: a guide for parents

Cambridge IGCSE is designed for 14 to 16 year olds, and most international schools in Singapore teach it across Year 10 and Year 11. Cambridge offers over 70 subjects, and assessment comes at the end of the course through written papers and, depending on the subject, oral, coursework or practical components. Exams run in the June and November series. Cambridge designs each syllabus around 130 guided learning hours, so a typical student carries a heavy load of separate exams in the final year. Grades are A* to G around the world. Cambridge also offers 9 to 1 graded versions in one administrative zone only, so check the exact syllabus code your child is entered for.

An IGCSE tutor teaches to the Cambridge syllabus code and syllabus years your child's exams fall under, since Cambridge revises syllabuses in cycles. Many subjects, including Mathematics and the sciences, have Core and Extended routes, and the route decides which papers are sat and which grades can be awarded. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online and follow the school's own calendar. A tutor checks the tier with you, works through past papers in the format your child will sit, and keeps practical and non-calculator skills sharp where the syllabus tests them. The subject pages below cover each IGCSE syllabus in detail.

Here is why the tier matters, with IGCSE Chemistry for 2026 to 2028. A Year 10 student who scores in the B range on school tests is entered for Core, perhaps because one early test went badly. On Core, Papers 1 and 3 plus the practical paper can award at most a C, however well the student does. On Extended, Papers 2 and 4 with the same practical paper can award A* to G.

A tutor who sees this early can teach the Supplement content alongside the Core content, so that if the school agrees to move the entry, your child is ready. Cambridge suggests Extended for students expected to reach a C or above, and the school makes the final entry.

IGCSE Tuition: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Core and Extended?

In subjects with two routes, Core covers the Core content only and Extended adds Supplement content. In IGCSE Chemistry for 2026 to 2028, Core candidates can get grades C to G and Extended candidates A* to G. In Mathematics 0580 for 2025 to 2027, Extended runs A* to E. The school makes the entry, so ask which route is planned.

Are IGCSE grades A* to G or 9 to 1?

Cambridge grades IGCSEs A* to G around the world. It offers 9 to 1 graded versions only in its administrative zone 3, and every school can keep A* to G. The scale is fixed by the syllabus code the school enters your child for, so the code on the entry tells you which grades apply.

When are IGCSE exams sat?

Cambridge runs IGCSE exams in the June and November series, with a March series in India only. Your child's school chooses the series. Ask the school for the series and the syllabus years, because Cambridge updates syllabuses in cycles and the right version depends on the exam year.

How much does IGCSE tuition cost?

IGCSE is in our IB and IGCSE rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$45 to S$60 for an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 for a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 for an ex-MOE teacher. Each subject is booked on its own, so the cost grows with the number of subjects and lessons a week.
