Where IGCSE Economics marks slip away
IGCSE Economics mixes definitions, diagrams and discussion. These are the gaps that show up in mock papers.
Definitions are close but not exact, which costs marks on Paper 1 and in the short parts of Paper 2.
Demand and supply diagrams shift the wrong curve, for example moving demand when a cost of production changes.
Elasticity is calculated, but the answer stops before saying what happens to total revenue.
Part (d) discussion questions give one side only, with no reasoned conclusion.

Students revising from older notes spend time on content the 2027 syllabus removed, such as fixed exchange rates.
These are all trainable, and a tutor who knows the revised syllabus keeps revision on what is actually examined.

IGCSE Economics Tuition: a guide for parents
Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455) has a revised syllabus for examination in 2027, 2028 and 2029. It is organised in six topics: the basic economic problem, the allocation of resources, microeconomic decision-makers, government and the macroeconomy, economic development, and international trade and globalisation. The revision removed some content, such as trade unions as a separate topic and fixed exchange rates, and added other content, including sustainability across the course, the causes and consequences of recession, monopoly as a source of market failure, and a new topic on changes in globalisation. Unlike the IGCSE sciences, Economics has no Core and Extended split, so every candidate sits the same two papers.
Read the full guide
An IGCSE Economics tutor plans around those two papers. Paper 1 is 40 multiple-choice questions in an hour, so definitions and diagrams must be quick and exact. Paper 2 is two hours of structured questions: one compulsory 20-mark question on unseen data in Section A, then three of four 20-mark questions in Section B. The part (d) questions in Section B need a reasoned discussion that considers two sides of an argument. Lessons build the diagrams your child must draw, such as demand and supply and average total cost curves, and practise turning a short case into a balanced answer.
A typical IGCSE Economics Section B sequence: a bakery cuts the price of a loaf by 10% and sells 25% more loaves. Part (a) asks your child to calculate the price elasticity of demand: 25 ÷ -10 = -2.5, so demand is price elastic. Part (b) asks what happens to total revenue, which rises because quantity rose by a bigger percentage than price fell. Part (d) then asks your child to discuss whether lower prices always benefit a firm.
A balanced answer gives the revenue gain, then the other side, such as the higher costs of producing more or rivals cutting prices too, and ends with a judgement. A tutor practises the full sequence under time, from the calculation to the conclusion.

IGCSE Economics Tuition: frequently asked questions
What changed in IGCSE Economics for 2027?
Cambridge revised 0455 for first examination in 2027. Some content was removed or reduced, such as the separate trade unions topic, principles of taxation and fixed exchange rates. Content was added on sustainability, recession, monopoly, mergers, competitive markets and changes in globalisation. The weighting of the evaluation objective fell, and knowledge and analysis now carry more weight.
Is there a Core and Extended choice in IGCSE Economics?
No. Unlike IGCSE Physics, Chemistry and Biology, every Economics candidate takes the same two papers and is eligible for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is one hour of 40 multiple-choice questions, worth 30%, and Paper 2 is two hours of structured questions, 80 marks and 70%.
How are the Section B discussion questions marked?
Part (d) of each Section B question is marked with levels of response. Your child needs clear, logical analysis and a reasoned discussion that considers two sides of the economic argument. A tutor practises a simple plan for these answers and marks them against the levels, so your child sees what moves an answer up.
Can my child use a calculator in IGCSE Economics?
Yes, calculators may be used in both papers. The syllabus includes calculations such as price elasticity of demand and supply, costs and revenue, and the current account balance, so a tutor makes sure your child writes the formula and working, then explains what the number means for the firm or the economy.
How much does IGCSE Economics Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
