JC H2 Economics (9570) is one of the most-taken JC subjects, particularly for students targeting Business, Finance, Accountancy, Economics and Public Policy university tracks at NUS, NTU and SMU. The format is two papers. Paper 1 is Case Study (60 marks, two case studies of 30 marks each, each containing data response and structured analysis). Paper 2 is Essays (75 marks, three essays of 25 marks each chosen from a question bank covering both micro and macroeconomics). The dominant grade-determining sections are the Paper 2 essays (75 marks) and the structured analysis sections of Paper 1 case studies. The biggest gap-creator is essay technique, specifically the ability to construct an evaluative argument that goes beyond stating the textbook answer.

Our H2 Economics tutors run a structured JC1 to JC2 programme. The JC1 syllabus covers microeconomics (demand and supply, elasticity, market structures, market failure, government intervention) plus the introduction to macroeconomics (national income accounting, aggregate demand and aggregate supply). The JC2 syllabus then layers open economy macroeconomics (international trade, exchange rates, balance of payments), more advanced market structures (oligopoly, contestable markets), and the integrative essay topics that combine micro and macro. Tutors are NUS, NTU, SMU graduates with strong Economics or Finance majors, ex-MOE JC Economics teachers, or PhD holders in economics-related fields.

On essay structure: the L3 evaluation band is the most teachable skill in H2 Economics and the precise difference between a B and an A grade. L1 essays describe the textbook concept. L2 essays apply the concept correctly to the question. L3 essays evaluate by surfacing a tension (short-term versus long-term, two conflicting objectives, supply-side versus demand-side, market mechanism versus government intervention) and resolving it with a reasoned judgment. Students who write only L1 and L2 get 16 to 18 out of 25.

Students who add a 4 to 6 sentence L3 evaluation paragraph at the end consistently score 21 to 23. Our tutors drill the evaluation paragraph as a separate writing exercise for the first 4 weeks of JC2, then integrate it into full-length essay practice for the rest of the year. By the September prelim, the L3 paragraph is automatic. The same logic applies to case-study answers in Paper 1, where a small evaluative concluding sentence on each structured-analysis question lifts the mark.

Common JC H2 Economics Struggles We Fix

H2 Economics marks at the A and B bands are decided on essay evaluation and case study analytical depth. The patterns we see most often:

βœ“

Essays describe the textbook concept correctly but do not evaluate (which is required for the L3 essay band, the difference between A and B).

βœ“

Case study data response questions are rushed or misread, losing easy marks.

βœ“

Diagrams (AD-AS, market failure, oligopoly) are drawn correctly but the explanation accompanying them is generic.

βœ“

Conflict-of-objectives questions (for example growth vs inflation) lack the framework for trade-off analysis.

βœ“

Open-economy macroeconomics (exchange rate impact, balance of payments) is the highest-loss JC2 topic.

βœ“

Time management on Paper 2 essays causes the third essay to be rushed.

These are the gaps our H2 Economics tutors fix with structured topical sequencing and weekly essay drilling.

JC H2 Economics Programme Structure

A 9570-aligned topical programme spanning JC1 and JC2:

1. Microeconomics Foundation (JC1)

The JC1 building blocks for case study and essay.

  • Demand and supply (elasticity, market equilibrium)
  • Market failure (externalities, public goods, information failure)
  • Government intervention (taxes, subsidies, regulation)
  • Market structures (perfect competition, monopolistic competition, monopoly)
  • Cost concepts and revenue analysis
  • Income distribution and equity

2. Macroeconomics Foundation (JC1 and JC2)

Closed-economy first, then open-economy.

  • National income accounting (GDP, GNI)
  • Aggregate demand and aggregate supply
  • Inflation, unemployment, growth (objectives and trade-offs)
  • Fiscal policy and monetary policy
  • Open-economy macroeconomics (trade, exchange rates)
  • Balance of payments and exchange rate regimes

3. Advanced Microeconomics (JC2)

The harder market structure topics.

  • Oligopoly (kinked demand, game theory introduction)
  • Contestable markets
  • Price discrimination
  • Cost-benefit analysis for government intervention
  • Behavioural economics introduction

4. Essay and Case Study Technique

The single most important JC2 area.

  • Essay structure (introduction, body, evaluation, conclusion)
  • Evaluation frameworks (short-term vs long-term, conflicting objectives)
  • Diagram-and-explanation pairing for full marks
  • Case study data response technique
  • Time management for Paper 2 (3 essays in 2 hours 15 minutes)
  • Marking-scheme keyword vocabulary

A Note from Joanne: "I came from Nanyang Girls High School, and am currently a Hwa Chong JC graduate who attained all As (90rp) in Econs, Math, Literature, Geography (H1) and General Paper. I have taught at Private International Schools, Primary School Grades Booster Lessons, and even in Taiwan before, handling students with various learning difficulties, and students’ age ranging from 6 to 18. My students consistently show improvement in grades, and grow to enjoy the subject more. I go beyond the lesson, providing options to work together with the student to build study plans, strategies, and I remain online throughout the week for students to submit additional work for marking, or to ask questions. I hope to help your child reach their fullest potential in the subject, making learning fun and interesting whilst building the right discipline and study habits! I will share my experiences getting my grades up from Ds to As within 3 months, and if I can do it, your child can too!"

What Our Parents Say

"I was at C grade for Economics in JC1. The tutor focused entirely on essay evaluation for the first three months and from there my essay marks jumped two bands. Final A-Level H2 Economics was A."

- Aaron

JC2 student from Bishan

"Open-economy macroeconomics confused me throughout JC2. The tutor walked through 15 past A-Level questions on exchange rates and balance of payments. By prelims my macro essay marks were consistent. Final A-Level was B, which got me into SMU Business."

- Janelle

JC2 student from Tampines
