How to choose JC and A-Level tuition for 2027: what matters for H2 subjects and rank points, how the options compare, current rates, and questions to ask a tutor.
The best JC tuition for 2027 is one that raises the H2 subject costing your child the most rank points, taught by a tutor fluent in that subject's A-Level paper, such as 9758 for H2 Mathematics or 9476 for H2 Chemistry. At A-Level, the gap between content and exam performance is widest, so the skill worth paying for is converting understanding into marks under time pressure.
What is and is not changing
The A-Level structure is not changing in 2027: JC students still sit GCE A-Level papers and university admission still uses rank points. The main change inside JC is that H2 Chemistry, Physics and Biology move to revised SEAB syllabuses examined from 2026 (9476, 9478 and 9477, replacing 9729, 9749 and 9744), so a tutor should be teaching to the new syllabus and its specimen papers. H2 Mathematics (9758) and H2 Economics (9570) keep their codes. What changes is upstream: the first SEC cohort enters Junior College after the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE), which replaces the JAE for SEC students, which uses L1R4 rather than L1R5. JC students often do well with one-to-one teaching because A-Level topics are deep enough that a single misunderstanding, in integration or organic mechanisms for example, can cost a whole question.

Which subject to prioritise
Put tuition where your child is losing the most rank points relative to their target course. A strong H2 grade does not offset a weak one in a subject the course requires. Usually that means working first on the H2 subject furthest below the grade they need, rather than polishing the one they already do well in.

As soon as a real gap shows in JC1. The JC1 content underpins JC2, and the JC2 year is short, so a topic left unresolved in JC1 is much harder to fix later.
Is H2 Math tuition worth it?
For students who need H2 Mathematics for their intended course and are losing marks, often yes, because it is a high-content subject where targeted help on weak topics pays off directly.
Group tuition or one-to-one for A-Levels?
Group classes suit students who are keeping up. One-to-one suits students with specific weak topics or who need a subject explained differently.
Is the A-Level changing in 2027?
Mostly no. The A-Level and rank points are unchanged, apart from the revised H2 Chemistry, Physics and Biology syllabuses (9476, 9478 and 9477) examined from 2026, and revised H2 Computing (9569), English Language and Linguistics (9508) and China Studies in Chinese (9629) examined from 2027. The larger change in 2027 is to the secondary exam, which affects students before they reach Junior College.
