Where IGCSE Maths students lose marks
IGCSE Maths tests the same skill with and without a calculator, and the tier sets the grades on offer. These are the patterns we see most.
Fraction, surd and percentage work is slow without a calculator, so the non-calculator paper runs out of time.
On the calculator paper, values are rounded mid-way and the final answer misses the accuracy asked for.
Extended students treat differentiation as a formula only, and cannot use it to find a turning point.
Function questions on f(x), composite functions and inverses are mixed up with simple substitution.
1 more
Students entered for Core aim for a grade the tier cannot award, because Core is capped at C.
Most of these are fixed by practising each topic twice, once by hand and once with a calculator.
The Cambridge 0580 syllabus, grouped for lessons
The 0580 syllabus has nine topic areas, and the Extended content contains the Core content plus more. Cambridge does not set a teaching order, so the tutor follows the school's.

- Conditional probability (Extended)
- Averages, measures of spread and statistical charts
- Scatter diagrams, cumulative frequency and histograms
Core or Extended: the two IGCSE 0580 tiers
Every candidate takes two papers, one without a calculator and one with. The tier decides which pair and which grades are possible. These details are from the 0580 syllabus for 2025 to 2027.
Exams run in the June and November series. A student aiming for A* to C needs Extended, so the tier conversation with the school is worth having early.

What IGCSE parents ask before the first lesson.
| Question | For IGCSE Maths |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits IGCSE? | Choose a tutor who has taught the Cambridge 0580 syllabus, or 0606 if your child takes Additional Mathematics, and who sets non-calculator practice. The local O-Level and SEC syllabuses overlap in places but differ in tiers, papers and some topics. Every profile lists the tutor's qualifications and teaching experience. |
| What does it cost? | IGCSE is in the IB and IGCSE band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of four 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor costs S$390 to S$540. |
| How does it start? | Tell us the school, the syllabus code, the tier and the exam series your child is entered for. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can follow the school's own calendar and break for its holidays. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

IGCSE Maths Tuition: a guide for parents
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics has the syllabus code 0580, and the syllabus in force covers exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027. It is tiered. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, and can be awarded grades C to G. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4, each 2 hours and 100 marks, and can be awarded grades A* to E. In both tiers the first paper allows no calculator. Exams run in the June and November series. The tier your child is entered for sets the highest grade available, so it is worth knowing early which one the school plans.

Some schools also offer IGCSE Additional Mathematics, code 0606. It assumes the content of IGCSE Mathematics and adds topics such as logarithms, the circle in coordinate geometry, radians, permutations and combinations, series, vectors and calculus. Our IGCSE tutors teach to the Cambridge syllabus your child's school follows. Lessons cover the topic the class is on, then practise the same skill on Cambridge-style questions, with and without a calculator. Each tutor profile lists the tutor's qualifications and experience, including which Cambridge syllabuses they have taught, and you choose who teaches your child.
A typical Extended question, on the non-calculator paper: find the coordinates of the turning points of y = x³ - 3x² + 4 and say which is a maximum. Many students can differentiate but stop there. The method is to set the gradient to zero: dy/dx = 3x² - 6x = 3x(x - 2) = 0, so x = 0 or x = 2. Substituting back gives the points (0, 4) and (2, 0).
To decide which is which, the second derivative 6x - 6 is -6 at x = 0, so (0, 4) is a maximum, and +6 at x = 2, so (2, 0) is a minimum. Checking the gradient either side also earns the marks. A tutor teaches the full chain, differentiate, solve, substitute, classify, and practises it without a calculator, since Paper 2 allows none. Differentiation is Extended content in the 0580 syllabus.

IGCSE Maths Tuition: frequently asked questions
Should my child take Core or Extended?
Cambridge says Core suits students expected to get a grade D or below, and Extended suits those expected to get a C or above. Core can award C to G, and Extended can award A* to E. The school makes the entry, so ask which tier is planned. A tutor can teach Extended topics early if your child may move up.
What is IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606?
It is a separate Cambridge IGCSE that assumes the content of IGCSE Mathematics and goes further, with topics such as logarithms, radians, permutations and combinations, series, vectors and calculus. There are two 2-hour papers of 80 marks, Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with one. Grades A* to E are available.
How much does IGCSE Maths tuition cost?
IGCSE is in our IB and IGCSE rate band. Hourly rates run S$45 to S$60 with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online, usually once a week, and the first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
Which IGCSE syllabus applies to my child?
Cambridge publishes 0580 and 0606 syllabuses for set exam years. The current versions cover exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027. Separate syllabuses are already published for exams from 2028 to 2030, so a student who sits the exam in 2028 or later should work from that version. Your child's school can confirm the exam series and year.
