Where H1 Maths students lose marks

H1 Maths is one paper, and most of its marks are statistics. These are the problems that show up in JC1 and JC2 tests.

Students without O-Level A-Math meet logarithms, the chain rule and integration for the first time and fall behind in the first term.

Hypothesis test conclusions say the claim is proven, instead of stating whether there is sufficient evidence at the given level, in context.

Normal distribution questions read P(X < x) when the wording asks for at least or more than.

Graphing calculator answers are written down with no working, which earns nothing if the answer is wrong.

1 more

Regression questions use the line of x on y to predict y, or extrapolate far beyond the data.

Section B carries 60 of the 100 marks, so clear statistical writing is worth as much practice as the calculations.

The H1 Maths 8865 syllabus, grouped for lessons

SEAB's 8865 syllabus for 2027 has a Pure Mathematics section and a Probability and Statistics section. The tutor follows the JC's lecture order and links each topic to the kind of real-world question the paper sets.

Functions, graphs, equations and inequalities

The algebra base for the paper, much of it new to students without A-Math.

Topics covered
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions, growth and decay
  • Laws of logarithms
  • Graph features: symmetry, intercepts, turning points and asymptotes
  • Conditions for a quadratic to have two, equal or no real roots
  • Simultaneous equations, one linear and one quadratic
  • Quadratic inequalities, and equations solved on a graphing calculator

Calculus

Differentiation and integration without the product and quotient rules, applied to maxima and areas.

Topics covered
  • Derivatives of xⁿ, eˣ and ln x, and the chain rule
  • Stationary points and the first or second derivative test
  • Tangents and maxima and minima problems
  • Integration of xⁿ, eˣ and (ax + b)ⁿ
  • Definite integrals and areas between curves and lines

Probability and distributions

Counting, probability rules and the two distributions the paper is built on.

Topics covered
  • Permutations and combinations, including restrictions
  • Mutually exclusive and independent events, and conditional probability
  • Binomial distribution and when it is a suitable model
  • Normal distribution and the standard normal
  • E(aX + b), Var(aX + b) and combinations of independent variables

Sampling, hypothesis testing and regression

The inference topics, where the written conclusion matters as much as the number.

Topics covered
  • Sample mean and the Central Limit Theorem
  • Unbiased estimates from summarised data
  • Tests for a population mean, 1-tail and 2-tail
  • Critical regions, significance levels and p-values
  • Correlation coefficient and the least squares regression line

The H1 Maths paper, and how it compares with H2

SEAB's 2027 syllabuses set one paper for H1 and two for H2. The statistics share of the marks is much higher in H1.

In 2027, JC1 Term 1 starts on 3 February, so new JC1 students have a short first term before the March break.

QuestionFor H1 Maths
Which tutor suits H1?Choose a tutor who teaches 8865 itself, since its calculus and statistics differ from H2 in what is included and left out. If your child did not take A-Math, ask how the tutor would close that gap in JC1. The profile shows whether a tutor has taught H1 before, along with qualifications.
What does it cost?H1 is in the Junior College band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor come to S$390 to S$540.
How does it start?Tell us the JC, JC1 or JC2, whether your child took A-Math, and the latest test result. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so lessons can run only through the statistics topics if that is where help is needed. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

H1 Maths Tuition: a guide for parents

H1 Mathematics is the A-Level subject with SEAB syllabus code 8865. For the 2027 A-Level it is examined in one 3-hour paper marked out of 100. Section A is Pure Mathematics, worth 40 marks over about 5 questions. Section B is Probability and Statistics, worth 60 marks over 6 to 8 questions. One question applies maths to a real-world setting from business or the social sciences and carries at least 12 marks. Every question must be answered, an approved graphing calculator is expected throughout, and a list of formulae is provided in the exam.

Read the full guide

SEAB writes that H1 Maths supports university study in business and the social sciences, and that it suits students who did not take O-Level Additional Mathematics, since it teaches the algebra and calculus they missed. That makes the first JC1 term a catch-up period for some students. Our H1 tutors start with that gap, logarithms and the chain rule first, then move to the statistics that carries most of the marks. Lessons follow the JC's lecture and tutorial order, and each week ends with a set of exam-style questions on the topic just taught.

A typical H1 Section B question: a company says its packets contain 500 g on average. A random sample of 50 packets has a mean of 497 g, and the population standard deviation is known to be 8 g. Test at the 5% level whether the mean mass is less than claimed. The null hypothesis is μ = 500 and the alternative is μ < 500.

Under the null hypothesis the sample mean is normal with standard deviation 8/√50, about 1.131, so the test statistic is (497 - 500)/1.131, about -2.65, and the p-value is about 0.004. Since 0.004 is less than 0.05, the null hypothesis is rejected: there is sufficient evidence at the 5% level that the mean mass is less than 500 g. Students often lose marks on that last sentence by writing that the claim is proven false.

A tutor drills the hypotheses, the distribution, the p-value and a conclusion in context as four separate marked lines.

H1 Maths Tuition: frequently asked questions

Who takes H1 Maths instead of H2?

SEAB describes H1 Maths as a foundation for university study in business and the social sciences, and says it suits students without O-Level A-Math. H2 Maths, 9758, is aimed at courses such as mathematics, sciences and engineering, and assumes some A-Math content. University courses set their own subject requirements, so check the courses your child is considering before choosing.

What does the H1 Maths paper look like?

It is one 3-hour paper marked out of 100. Section A has about 5 Pure Mathematics questions worth 40 marks. Section B has 6 to 8 Probability and Statistics questions worth 60 marks. One question applies maths to a real-world context and carries at least 12 marks. All questions must be answered, and a list of formulae is provided.

How much does H1 Maths tuition cost?

H1 is in our Junior College rate band. An undergraduate tutor charges S$45 to S$60 an hour, a full-time tutor S$65 to S$90 and an ex-MOE teacher S$90 to S$130. Most H1 students have one lesson a week of 1.5 to 2 hours, at home or online, and the first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.

Can my child use the graphing calculator for everything?

SEAB expects an approved graphing calculator, and unsupported answers from it are generally allowed unless a question says otherwise. But an incorrect answer with no working gets no marks, while written evidence of correct calculator use can earn method marks. Where a graph is used to find a solution, it should be sketched. A tutor practises writing the setup for every calculator step.
