I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

The grade, explained

How O-Level and SEC grades turn into points

JC admission adds English and the best relevant subjects. Fewer points is better. From the 2028 PSE, JC needs an L1R4 of 16 or below, every subject at G3.

  1. A11 point
  2. A22 points
  3. B33 points
  4. B44 points
  5. C55 points
  6. C66 points
  7. D77 points
  8. E88 points
  9. F99 points

O-Level E-Math in brief

O-Level Elementary Mathematics (E-Math, code 4052) is the foundation maths paper for Secondary 4. The format is two papers of 90 marks each. Paper 1 (2 hours 15 minutes) has about 26 short questions weighted toward direct topic recall (algebra, mensuration, trigonometry basics, statistics). Paper 2 is structured questions with multi-step working, including a final application question worth 10 to 12 marks that often decides the gap between B3 and A2 grades. The 4052 syllabus has three strands: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics and Probability.

Read the full guide

SEAB does not publish a fixed share of marks for each strand. Sec 4 students who plateau at C5 or C6 often lose marks in three predictable places: trigonometry application questions (especially bearings and 3D problems), statistics interpretation (mean from grouped data, cumulative frequency), and the multi-step Paper 2 final application question.

Our O-Level E-Math tutors run a structured Sec 3 to Sec 4 programme. The Sec 3 curriculum builds the algebra and trigonometry foundations that Sec 4 application questions assume. The Sec 4 curriculum is then mostly review and exam technique, with weekly past-paper practice from June onwards. Tutors range from experienced full-time tutors to NUS, NTU or SMU graduates with strong Math majors, and each profile on your shortlist states the tutor's background. Lessons align to the school topical CA cycle (we will ask which secondary school your child attends) so that tuition reinforces school content.

A specific exam-pattern detail: the final application question on Paper 2 is a multi-step scenario that often draws on several topics at once. Students who plan their Paper 2 timing to leave at least 25 minutes for the final question avoid rushing it. Our tutors drill the timing rhythm in weekly mock papers from August of Sec 4: about 100 minutes for the structured questions, 25 minutes for the final real-world question and 10 minutes to check. We also coach the working-shown convention that scores method marks even when the final answer is wrong.

The O-Level arc starts earlier than Sec 3. The Secondary 1 maths syllabus covers primes, HCF and LCM, integers and rational numbers, approximation and estimation, basic algebraic expressions and linear equations, simple inequalities, angles and parallel lines, ratio, rate and percentage, linear functions and graphs, perimeter and area, number patterns and data handling.

The Secondary 2 maths syllabus builds directly on it: simultaneous linear equations, expansion and factorisation, algebraic fractions, quadratic expressions and graphs, direct and inverse proportion, congruence and similarity, Pythagoras theorem, introductory trigonometric ratios, mensuration of pyramids, cones and spheres, probability of single events and statistical diagrams. These Sec 1 and Sec 2 topics are exactly the assumed knowledge behind the 4052 application questions, a Sec 3 student who struggles with E-Math is usually carrying an algebra or proportion gap from lower secondary.

We coach Sec 1 and Sec 2 students on the same programme so the foundations are secured before the O-Level years, and we run a diagnostic on lower-secondary topics for every Sec 3 starter.

A note on the 2027 transition: the November 2026 sitting is the final GCE O-Level examination. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) under Full Subject-Based Banding, where E-Math becomes a G3 subject with the new syllabus code K310 (replacing 4052. The earlier 4048 code was retired after 2024). The familiar A1 to B3 grade bands carry over at G3, and the mathematical content, algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability, maps across, so everything on this page applies to both the last O-Level cohort and the first SEC cohorts. Where the SEC specimen materials differ in emphasis, our tutors teach to the syllabus your child will actually sit.

Common O-Level E-Math Struggles We Fix

O-Level E-Math marks at the B3 and A2 bands are decided on application questions and exam technique. The patterns we see most often:

✓

Strong on Paper 1 short questions but loses marks on Paper 2 multi-step questions because of working-shown discipline.

✓

Trigonometry application (bearings, 3D problems, sine rule, cosine rule) is a frequent loss area.

✓

Statistics interpretation (cumulative frequency, box plots, standard deviation) is rushed or misread.

✓

The final Paper 2 application question is often skipped or answered incomplete.

2 more
✓

Algebraic manipulation errors compound under exam time pressure.

✓

Confusion between similar topics (bearings vs angles of elevation, mean from grouped vs ungrouped data).

These are the gaps our O-Level E-Math tutors fix with structured Sec 3 to Sec 4 sequencing and weekly past-paper drilling.

O-Level E-Math Programme Structure

A 4052-aligned topical programme spanning Sec 3 to Sec 4, with exam-technique drilling from June of Sec 4:

Sec 1 and Sec 2 Foundations (lower secondary)

The lower-secondary maths syllabus that 4052 application questions assume. Coached for Sec 1 and Sec 2 students, and diagnosed for every Sec 3 starter.

Topics covered
  • Sec 1: primes, HCF and LCM, integers, approximation and estimation
  • Sec 1: algebraic expressions, linear equations, simple inequalities
  • Sec 1: ratio, rate, percentage, linear graphs, angles and polygons
  • Sec 2: simultaneous equations, expansion and factorisation, algebraic fractions
  • Sec 2: quadratic expressions and graphs, direct and inverse proportion
  • Sec 2: Pythagoras theorem, introductory trigonometry, congruence and similarity

Why parents pick us

4052-Specialist Tutors

We shortlist tutors whose profiles show E-Math teaching experience. Lessons work to the SEAB marking scheme and the high-loss patterns in recent papers.

Sec 3 to Sec 4 Continuity

We typically retain the same tutor across Sec 3 and Sec 4. Continuity matters because the Sec 4 application questions assume the Sec 3 algebra and trigonometry foundations.

School Topical-CA Alignment

We ask which secondary school your child attends and align lessons to the school topical CA schedule.

O-Level E-Math (4052) covers number and algebra, ratio and proportion, percentage, coordinate geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, and statistics and probability.

How is E-Math examined?

Two written papers covering the full syllabus, with a scientific calculator permitted. The grade counts in the L1R5 aggregate for the 2027 JAE and in the L1R4 aggregate for the PSE from 2028.

Where are E-Math marks most often lost?

Trigonometry application, statistics interpretation, and the multi-step Paper 2 word problem, generally to setup and working errors rather than missing knowledge.
