Secondary 3 is where the O-Level Maths syllabus formally begins — both Elementary Mathematics (SEAB 4048) and, for most Express-stream students, Additional Mathematics (4049). The Sec 3 content is the larger half of the two-year O-Level load: in E-Math, the trigonometry, coordinate geometry and mensuration topics; in A-Math, the introduction of calculus (differentiation), the harder algebra (surds, indices, polynomials, partial fractions), and trigonometric identities. Students who treat Sec 3 as a relaxed year before the Sec 4 'real' exam year almost always pay for it — the Sec 3 content is examined in full at O-Level.
