How the L1R5 aggregate works

L1R5 stands for one Language plus five Relevant subjects. L1 is normally English. R5 is your five best relevant subjects, which must include at least one Math/Science subject and one Humanities subject. Each O-Level grade carries a point value, and the six values are added — the lower the total, the stronger the result. Bonus points from CCA, school affiliation and Higher Mother Tongue are then subtracted, up to a cap of four.

The best possible L1R5 is 6 — an A1 in English and all five relevant subjects — before any bonus points. An aggregate of 20 or below meets the baseline for JC admission. From the 2028 Joint Admissions Exercise, MOE moves to an L1R4 aggregate; students sitting O-Levels in 2025 and 2026 still use L1R5.

Frequently asked questions

How is the L1R5 aggregate calculated?

L1R5 adds the grade points of your first language (English) and your five best relevant subjects. Each grade has a point value from A1=1 to F9=9, and the five relevant subjects must include at least one Math/Science and one Humanities subject. A lower aggregate is better.

What L1R5 score do I need to get into a JC?

An L1R5 aggregate of 20 or below meets the baseline to be considered for Junior College. Admission to a specific JC then depends on that college's cut-off point for the year, which varies and is published after each Joint Admissions Exercise.

Which subjects count towards R5?

R5 is your five best relevant subjects besides English. They must include at least one Math/Science subject and one Humanities subject; the remaining places go to your next-best results. This calculator selects the optimal five for you.

How do O-Level bonus points work?

Bonus points are deducted from the aggregate, which improves it. They can come from CCA performance, secondary-school affiliation, Higher Mother Tongue and certain other categories, up to a total of 4 points. Because affiliation depends on your school, enter your own total in the calculator.

Is the L1R5 system changing?

Yes. MOE will move JC admission from L1R5 to L1R4 — one fewer subject — from the 2028 Joint Admissions Exercise. Students sitting O-Levels in 2025 and 2026 are still assessed on L1R5.
