MOE marks every 2027 date as tentative. For reference, the 2026 JAE ran from results on 14 January to posting on 3 February, so the pattern is stable.
How the JAE works, step by step
- Read Form AIt shows your gross L1R5, L1R4, every ELR2B2 type and the ITE aggregates, plus the courses you can apply for.
- Subtract bonus pointsOnly what each route allows. JC and MI allow up to 4 points, polytechnics and ITE count CCA points only.
- Compare with last yearEach course's 2026 range runs from the best to the last admitted net score.
- Rank 12 choicesPut what you most want first. Order matters, because affiliation points only apply to your first one or two choices.
- Get posted, or appealMOE posts by merit. If a choice falls through, you go to the next one you qualify for.
A worked example
Numbers make the JAE easier to understand than any description. Take a student, whom we will call Mei, with these 2026 O-Level grades and a LEAPS 2.0 attainment of Good, worth 1 CCA bonus point. Grades convert to points the usual way, from A1 as 1 to F9 as 9, and lower is better.
| Subject | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | B3 | 3 |
| Chinese | B3 | 3 |
| Mathematics | A2 | 2 |
| Additional Mathematics | B4 | 4 |
| Chemistry | B3 | 3 |
| Physics | C5 | 5 |
| Combined Humanities (Social Studies, Geography) | B4 | 4 |
L1R5 for junior college. L1 is English (3). R1 is the best Humanities subject, Combined Humanities (4). R2 is the best Maths or Science subject, Mathematics (2). R3 is the best remaining Humanities, Maths or Science subject, Chemistry (3). R4 and R5 are the two best of everything left, Chinese (3) and Additional Mathematics (4). The gross is 19, inside the JC limit of 20. After 1 CCA point the net is 18.
L1R4 for Millennia Institute. English (3), the two best Humanities, Maths or Science subjects, Mathematics (2) and Chemistry (3), then the two best of the rest, Chinese (3) and Combined Humanities (4). Gross 15, net 14.
ELR2B2-C for science, engineering and IT diplomas. English (3), Mathematics as the relevant maths subject (2), Chemistry as the relevant science (3), then the two best others, Chinese (3) and Additional Mathematics (4). Gross 15, net 14.
- Mei's net L1R5 (JC)
- 18
- Mei's net L1R4 (MI)
- 14
- Mei's net ELR2B2-C (poly)
- 14
- Poly courses whose last admitted 2026 score was 14 or higher
- 113 of 193
What does that buy Mei? Against the 2026 JAE ranges in MOE's booklet, a net L1R5 of 18 sits exactly on the last admitted score for Yishun Innova JC Science (9 to 18). It is also inside Yishun Innova Arts, which still had places after posting, and outside every other JC's 2026 range. A net L1R4 of 14 is comfortably inside Millennia Institute's 2026 ranges. A net ELR2B2 of 14 was at or better than the last admitted score for 113 of the 193 polytechnic courses with 2026 data. If Mei's first choice were her affiliated JC, 2 more bonus points would bring her net L1R5 to 16 for that choice only. Our JC cut-off points guide and polytechnic cut-off points guide list every 2026 range.
You can check your own numbers with our L1R5 and L1R4 calculator.
Which aggregate each route uses
| Route | Aggregate | Subjects counted | Eligible if | Bonus points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior college (2-year A-Level or IB) | L1R5 | English or Higher MT, 5 relevant subjects | Gross 20 or better, plus subject grades | Up to 4 |
| Millennia Institute (3-year A-Level) | L1R4 | English or Higher MT, 4 relevant subjects | Gross 20 or better, plus subject grades | Up to 4, no affiliation |
| Polytechnic (3-year diploma) | ELR2B2 (types A, B, C, D) | English, 2 relevant, 2 best others | Net 26 or better (Nursing 28), plus course requirements | CCA only, up to 2 |
| ITE 2-year Higher Nitec | ELB4, ELR1B3 or ELR2B2 | English plus 4 others, by course | At least 5 O-Level subjects over at most 2 years, plus course requirements | CCA only, up to 2 |
For junior college there are subject floors too: English from A1 to C6, one Mathematics from A1 to D7, and a Mother Tongue from A1 to D7 (or Higher Mother Tongue to E8). A student who misses one floor can still be admitted on condition, if the L1R5 gross is 15 or better, or 16 to 20 with A1 or A2 in all five relevant subjects.
Each polytechnic course uses one of four ELR2B2 types, so a student does not have one ELR2B2 score but up to four. The type depends on the course family: A for arts and media, B for business, C for science, engineering and IT, D for design. Form A works all four out for you.
Bonus points that count in 2027
Bonus points for JC and MI (maximum 4)
- 2 or 1CCA, LEAPS 2.0Excellent earns 2 points, Good earns 1.
- 2English and Higher Mother TongueFor grades A1 to C6.
- 2Special Programme languageChinese or Malay (Special Programme) or Bahasa Indonesia, A1 to C6.
- 2, JC onlyAffiliated JCOnly if the affiliated JC is your 1st choice, or your 1st and 2nd. Not for private candidates.
A student posted to a Chinese, Malay or Tamil Language Elective Programme at the JC that runs it receives 2 further points on top of the cap. Polytechnics and ITE use CCA points only: 2 for Excellent and 1 for Good. Higher Mother Tongue and affiliation earn nothing for those routes.
How to spread 12 choices
The published ranges are history, not promises. MOE says the scores are not set in advance and move each year with the cohort's results and choices. That makes the order of your list a risk decision as much as a preference list. A sensible pattern:
- 2 to 3 reach choicesCourses you want most, where your net score is a point or two above last year's last admitted score
- 5 to 6 match choicesCourses where your score sits inside last year's range
- 2 to 3 safe choicesCourses you would still be happy in, where your score beat last year's range comfortably
Three cautions. Put the course you truly want first, because posting is by merit and a high choice does not cost you a lower one. Check the aggregate type for each course, because your ELR2B2-B can be several points different from your ELR2B2-C. And remember the tie-breakers: if two students have the same net score for the last place, a Singapore Citizen goes before a PR, then the lower gross score wins, then a computerised ballot decides.
If the posting result disappoints
You can appeal only after results are out. For a polytechnic or ITE 2-year Higher Nitec course, you must meet both the course requirements and the net score of the last student admitted to it in 2027. Singapore Polytechnic, for example, accepts up to six appeal choices and cancels your original posting only if an appeal succeeds. JC and MI appeals go straight to the college. Report to the place you were posted to while you wait.
Students who accepted a Polytechnic Early Admissions place or a DSA-JC place before the results cannot take part in the JAE, provided the offer is confirmed on results day.
The 2027 JAE and the 2028 PSE

|---|---|---|
| JC aggregate | L1R5, gross 20 or better | L1R4, gross 16 or better |
| MI aggregate | L1R4, gross 20 or better | L1R4, gross 20 or better |

| Choices and window | 12 choices over 6 days | 12 choices over 6 days |
A student who sits the O-Level in 2026 applies under the 2027 rules even if a younger sibling is in the SEC cohort. Our L1R4 guide covers the 2028 rules in detail.

Common questions
When are the 2026 O-Level results released?
Tentatively between Wednesday 13 and Friday 15 January 2027. Students receive Form A by email that afternoon.
How long is the JAE application window?
Six calendar days, from 4pm on results day to 4.30pm on the sixth day. The online system is open around the clock during that time.
How many choices can I make?
Up to 12 course codes, in order of preference, from the JC, MI, polytechnic and ITE courses you are eligible for.
Does the order of my choices matter?
Yes. Applicants are considered in order of merit for their chosen courses, and the affiliation bonus applies only to a first choice, or a first and second choice.
Do Higher Chinese or affiliation give bonus points for polytechnic?
No. Polytechnics and ITE count CCA bonus points only, 2 for Excellent and 1 for Good.
Is the 2027 JAE the last JAE?
It is the last for the O-Level school cohort. From 2028, students with SEC results apply through the Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, which can also take older O-Level results.
What if two students have the same score for the last place?
Citizenship decides first, then the lower gross aggregate, then a computerised ballot.
Will the cut-offs be the same as in 2026?
Not necessarily. MOE says the scores are not fixed in advance. The 2027 ranges are published on posting day.
