How to Calculate L1R5 and ELR2B2: 2027 JAE Worked Examples

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

Two fully worked examples show how to calculate L1R5 for junior college and ELR2B2 for polytechnic in the 2027 JAE: grade points, which subject fills each slot, bonus points, gross versus net, and the eligibility lines MOE sets.

How to calculate L1R5: convert each O-Level grade to points (A1 is 1, F9 is 9), then add six subjects in a fixed order, English or Higher Mother Tongue (L1), your best Humanities (R1), your best Maths or Science (R2), your best remaining Humanities, Maths or Science (R3) and your two best other subjects (R4, R5). That total is the gross L1R5. For the 2027 Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE), a junior college place needs a gross L1R5 of 20 or below, and up to 4 bonus points are then taken off to give the net score MOE posts on (MOE, 14 Sep 2026). Polytechnics use ELR2B2 instead, with a net of 26 or below, or 28 for Nursing. The two worked examples below show every step.

Worked example 1: how to calculate L1R5 for a junior college place

The quickest way to learn the Singapore L1R5 count is to score one results slip. Aaron is a made-up student with seven 2026 O-Level subjects, a LEAPS 2.0 CCA attainment of Excellent, and an affiliated JC as his planned first choice in the 2027 JAE.

Start by turning grades into points. Each O-Level grade, and each SEC G3 grade from 2027, is worth its own number.

Next, find each subject's category on MOE's subject list (12 Mar 2026). Higher Chinese sits under Others, so it can only be L1 or a free slot.

Fill the slots with the fewest options first. R1 takes only Humanities, so a student with one Humanities subject has no choice there.

  1. L1 takes English, 2 pointsEnglish at A2 beats Higher Chinese at B4, so English is the first language.
  2. R1 takes Humanities, 4 pointsHumanities (Social Studies, History) is Aaron's only Humanities subject, so its B4 must count.
  3. R2 takes Mathematics, 1 pointThe best Maths or Science grade is the A1 in Mathematics.
  4. R3 takes Additional Mathematics, 2 pointsA-Math and Chemistry are both A2. Either one can fill R3 and the total does not change.
  5. R4 and R5 take Chemistry and Physics, 5 pointsThese are the two best of what is left. Higher Chinese at B4 drops out because Physics at B3 is better.
  6. Add the six, 14 points2 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 gives a gross L1R5 of 14, inside the JC line of 20.

Aaron also clears every subject floor: English A2, Mathematics A1 and Higher Chinese B4.

How bonus points turn Aaron's gross 14 into a net 10

MOE subtracts JC bonus points from the gross L1R5 to give the net L1R5 used for JAE posting, and the 2027 cap is 4 points (MOE, 14 Sep 2026). The types are CCA (2 for Excellent, 1 for Good), English and Higher Mother Tongue both at A1 to C6 (2), a Special Programme language or Bahasa Indonesia at A1 to C6 (2), and an affiliated JC as first, or first and second, choice (2).

Aaron qualifies for three of these, worth 6 points between them: CCA Excellent, English A2 with Higher Chinese B4, and his affiliated JC. Only 4 are taken off.

Those ranges come from MOE's "Courses offered in 2027 JAE" booklet, and MOE says past ranges are a reference only. Our JC cut-off points for 2027 lists every college.

The gross still matters after posting begins. When two Singapore applicants tie on net score for the last place in a course, MOE posts the one with the lower gross aggregate first, then uses a computerised ballot (MOE, How posting works, 12 Mar 2026).

Worked example 2: how to calculate ELR2B2 for a polytechnic course

ELR2B2 is the polytechnic aggregate in the 2027 JAE: English Language, plus two relevant subjects (R1, R2), plus the two best other subjects (B1, B2), minus CCA bonus points (MOE, 14 Sep 2026). Each diploma uses one of four types, ELR2B2-A, B, C or D, and the type decides which subjects count as relevant. CourseFinder shows the type for each course.

MOE's aggregate types table sets R1 as Mathematics or Additional Mathematics for types B, C and D. For ELR2B2-B, R2 can be Principles of Accounts, Economics, Geography, History or a Humanities subject, among others. For ELR2B2-C, R2 is a science or a technical subject such as Computing or Design and Technology.

Nur is a made-up student with six 2026 O-Level grades: English C6, Malay B4, Mathematics C5, Principles of Accounts B3, Science (Physics, Chemistry) D7 and Humanities (Social Studies, Geography) C6. Her CCA attainment of Good is worth 1 point.

Net2324

Nur's net ELR2B2-B of 23 and net ELR2B2-C of 24 are both under the polytechnic line of 26, and the ELR2B2-C score is also under the Nursing line of 28. She still needs each course's own entry requirements on CourseFinder. Our polytechnic cut-off points for 2027 shows the 2026 ranges.

The same grades give Nur a gross L1R5 of 31 (6 + 6 + 5 + 7 + 3 + 4), above 20, so junior college is closed to her in the 2027 JAE.

Two rules differ from JC. Polytechnic eligibility is judged on the net score, while JC eligibility is judged on the gross. And polytechnics count only CCA points, 2 for Excellent and 1 for Good, so Higher Mother Tongue and affiliation earn nothing there.

Which O-Level subjects can fill R1, R2 and R3 in L1R5?

MOE's GCE O-Level subjects and categories page (12 Mar 2026) decides the R slots. Humanities covers Geography, History, the Literatures, every Humanities (Social Studies) combination, Higher Art, Higher Music, the two Special Programme languages and Bahasa Indonesia as a Third Language. Mathematics means E-Math or A-Math. Science means Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a Combined Science pairing.

Economics, Principles of Accounts, Computing, Art, Music, Design and Technology, and the Mother Tongue subjects all sit under Others. For L1R5 they can only fill R4 or R5, apart from a Higher Mother Tongue used as L1. Economics is the one most often misfiled: it is not a Humanities subject for junior college.

Three things never count towards a JC aggregate: Religious Knowledge, Merit or Pass grades in a Mother Tongue 'B' syllabus, and a second grade in the same Mother Tongue. Higher Chinese as L1, for example, rules out Chinese as R4 or R5.

What gross L1R5 do you need for junior college in 2027?

Junior college eligibility in the 2027 JAE is a gross L1R5 of 20 or below, checked before any bonus points (MOE, 14 Sep 2026). A student who misses a subject floor, such as English at C6, can still be admitted on condition if the gross is low enough.

Conditional admission has a deadline: the student must reach the required grade by the end of JC Year 1, or move to Year 2 of a Millennia Institute course. An Absent grade rules it out.

Millennia Institute uses L1R4: the first language, the two best Humanities, Maths or Science subjects, and the two best others. The gross must be 20 or below, with the same subject floors and bonus cap but no affiliation points. Our 2027 JAE guide covers dates and how to rank the 12 choices, and the O-Level explainer covers the exam itself.

What changes for the first SEC cohort in the 2028 PSE?

Students sitting the SEC in 2027 apply in the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, which replaces the JAE. MOE's PSE page for JC and MI (28 Jul 2026) sets junior college at a gross L1R4 of 16 or below and keeps Millennia Institute at 20.

The 2028 L1R4 keeps the L1R5 slots but drops R5, so R4 is the only free G3 subject. If Aaron's grades were G3 grades, his L1R4 would be 11 gross and 8 net under the cap of 3.

MOE's infosheet of 6 Mar 2025 expects the proportion and profile of JC-eligible students to stay similar. The PSE also adds choice order as a tie-breaker, before gross score (MOE, 3 Mar 2026). Our PSE 2028 guide walks through the whole exercise, and L1R4 for JC admission explains what one fewer subject means for revision.

Common questions

What does L1R5 mean?

L1R5 stands for First Language plus five Relevant subjects. It is the aggregate MOE uses for junior college admission in the 2027 JAE, made of six O-Level grades added as points.

How do you count O-Level points?

Each grade is worth its number: A1 is 1, A2 is 2, and so on down to 9 (F9), which is 9. Add the subjects an aggregate asks for, and a lower total is better.

Do bonus points count towards the L1R5 limit of 20?

No. MOE checks junior college eligibility on the gross L1R5, before bonus points. Bonus points only lower the net score used for posting.

Does Economics count as a Humanities subject for L1R5?

No. MOE lists Economics under Others, so it can fill R4 or R5 but not R1 or R3. It does count as a relevant subject for some polytechnic aggregate types, such as ELR2B2-B.

Can I count both Chinese and Higher Chinese?

No. MOE does not allow Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue grades in the same aggregate. Use whichever one gives the lower total.

Is there a calculator for L1R5 and L1R4?

Yes. Our L1R5 and L1R4 calculator fills the slots once you enter each grade, using the same MOE rules as the examples above.
