What costs marks in the Sec 4 English year
By Sec 4 your child knows the papers. Marks are lost to time, to the rubric, and to the parts practised least.
Paper 1 runs out of time, so the continuous writing piece is rushed or the editing section is skipped.
The summary goes well past about 80 words, or keeps the passage's phrasing instead of the student's own.
In Paper 3, the note-taking task is heard only once, and a missed detail cannot be recovered.
The oral planned response wanders from the prompt, or stops well short of the 2 minutes allowed.

2026 was the last O-Level year and 2027 is the first SEC year. This is what changes, and what does not, for English.
For your child's revision this means 1184 past papers are still useful practice for K300, since the format is unchanged.

Secondary 4 English Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 4 is the national exam year, and 2027 is a change year. MOE confirmed that students take the GCE O-Level until 2026. The 2027 Sec 4 cohort entered Sec 1 in 2024 under Full SBB and is the first to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate. For G3 English the SEC syllabus is K300, which replaces O-Level syllabus 1184. G2 English is K200 and G1 English is K100. SEAB states that the mode of assessment and the exam standard stay the same, and G3 results use the O-Level grading structure.

So the paper your child sits in 2027 looks like the 1184 paper, with the same four papers, marks and timings. The difference is in how the year runs. Sec 4 has no slack, so a tutor plans backwards from the school prelims and the national papers, with timed practice from the first term. Lessons focus on the parts that still cost marks for your child, checked against returned scripts. Our tutors also set listening and oral practice, which are easy to neglect. Results come out in January 2028, and the new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise for SEC students starts that month.
Paper 1 gives 1 hour 50 minutes for three sections worth 10, 30 and 30 marks: editing, situational writing and continuous writing. Many students in Sec 4 spend too long on the situational task and leave 35 minutes for a 350 to 500 word continuous piece. A tutor sets a time plan and practises it until it is automatic. One plan that works for many students is about 10 minutes for editing, 40 for situational writing, 50 for continuous writing and 10 to check.
Your child first practises each section against its own clock, then the whole paper. After each attempt the tutor notes where the time went and adjusts. The aim is that on exam day no section is skipped and every piece has a real ending.

Does my child sit the O-Level or the SEC in Sec 4?
It depends on the year. MOE says the O-Level and N-Level run until 2026, so Sec 4 in 2026 sat O-Level English 1184. From the 2024 Sec 1 cohort, students sit the Singapore-Cambridge SEC, so Sec 4 in 2027 sits SEC English: K300 at G3, K200 at G2 or K100 at G1.
How much does Secondary 4 English tuition cost?
Sec 4 falls in our Upper Secondary rate band: S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. A second weekly lesson can be added before the prelims. With no minimum, you can scale back once the papers are over.
Is the SEC English paper harder than the O-Level?
SEAB states that the mode of assessment and the overall exam standard of the SEC are the same as the O-Level, N(A) and N(T) Levels. The G3 English syllabus K300 has the same four papers, marks, weightings and timings as 1184. The K300 syllabus states that the oral is delivered via computer. G3 grades follow the O-Level grading structure.
When are SEC results released?
SEAB says SEC results are released in January of the following year, so the 2027 sitting has results in January 2028. MOE's new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise for SEC students starts that month and covers Junior College, Millennia Institute, polytechnic and ITE courses on one platform.
Is it too late to start English tuition in Sec 4?
Not if the plan is focused. Starting in Term 1 gives time to fix one or two papers properly. A later start should focus on the most learnable marks, such as editing, the summary and oral technique, rather than trying to change writing style. Outcomes vary with starting point and effort, and the tutor will be honest about what can change in the time left.
