Where Primary 3 English marks slip

P3 is the first year English is marked in a way that counts, and the papers ask for more than reading and spelling. These are the patterns tutors see most in returned P3 work.

Comprehension answers copy a whole line from the passage, including the parts that do not answer the question.

How do you know questions, which need an inference, get an answer that only repeats what the story says.

Grammar choices go wrong when the sentence is longer, for example a verb that agrees with the nearest word instead of the subject.

Longer words such as beautiful, different and probably are spelt the way they sound.

Compositions start straight into the action, with no setting, and end suddenly when the time runs out.

Each is a method problem rather than a lack of ability, and P3 is a good year to set the methods right.

What a P3 English tutor covers

P3 begins the Middle Primary stage of the MOE syllabus. The tutor keeps to your school's order of units, but makes sure each skill below is secure before the end-of-year paper.

Close reading and comprehension

Reading for what is stated and what is implied, using clues in the text and what your child already knows.

Topics covered
  • Finding the exact part of the passage that answers a question
  • Answering in a full sentence that uses the question's words
  • Inference: how do you know and why do you think
  • Working out word meanings from context
  • Sequencing events in a passage
  • Reading tables, posters and other visual texts

Grammar and editing

Grammar used at sentence and text level, and to correct one's own writing.

Topics covered
  • Subject and verb agreement in longer sentences
  • Keeping tenses consistent across a passage
  • Pronouns that refer back clearly
  • Linking words between sentences, such as however and later
  • Spotting and correcting errors in a short passage

Vocabulary and spelling

Words studied by how they are formed, how they relate and how they are used in context.

Topics covered
  • Prefixes and suffixes, such as un, re, ful and less
  • Words with similar and opposite meanings
  • Spelling rules for longer, multisyllabic words
  • Common phrases and fixed expressions
  • Choosing a precise word instead of a general one

Composition, oral and listening

Planned writing with a clear structure, plus the speaking and listening work school assesses.

Topics covered
  • Planning a story before writing it
  • Writing a beginning that sets the scene
  • Paragraphs for the problem and the ending
  • Reading a passage aloud with expression
  • Talking about a picture with reasons
  • Listening for key details and main ideas

P3: the first marked year for English

P3 is when MOE's assessment rules change. Knowing them helps you read your child's results in context.

Weighted assessments are allowed, after none in P1 and P2
From P3
At most one weighted assessment per subject per term
1 per term
Mid-year exams were removed at all remaining levels by 2023
No mid-year exam
The syllabus stage for P3 and P4, with close reading at literal and inferential levels
Middle Primary

Because there are few marked assessments, each one tells you a lot. Keep the returned papers. A tutor can read through them with your child and find the two or three errors that repeat, which is often where the quickest gains are.

Primary 3 English Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 3 is the first year your child's English work is marked in a way that counts. MOE's Learn for Life changes allow weighted assessments from P3, with no more than one per subject per term, and mid-year exams have been removed at every remaining level since 2023. So the P3 English mark comes from a small number of assessments and the end-of-year paper. Each one carries more weight than a child used to worksheets expects. At the same time the syllabus moves into its Middle Primary stage. Reading now means close reading for what is stated and what is implied, and grammar is used to edit writing, not only to fill in a blank.

Read the full guide

A P3 English tutor helps your child meet both changes. Lessons cover comprehension questions that ask how or why, grammar and vocabulary in context, spelling of longer words, and composition planned before it is written. The tutor also shows your child how a marked paper works: where the marks sit, what a full answer looks like, and how to check the work before handing it in. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online, usually an hour to 1.5 hours a week. Send us the school's latest English test if you have one. We reply with 2 to 4 tutor profiles on WhatsApp within 16 hours.

A P3 inference question: in the passage, Ravi's hands shook as he walked to the front of the hall, and he kept looking at the door. The question asks, How do you know Ravi was nervous? Many children answer, Because he was nervous, or copy the whole paragraph. A tutor teaches a three-part answer. First, find the clue: his hands shook and he kept looking at the door. Second, say what it shows: he wanted to leave. Third, write it as one full sentence that uses the question's words: I know Ravi was nervous because his hands shook and he kept looking at the door. Practising this pattern on short passages each week is how inference stops being a guess.

Primary 3 English Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is P3 English assessed?

From P3, schools may hold weighted assessments, with no more than one per subject per term, and there is no mid-year exam at any level since 2023. Each school sets its own P3 English papers, which often include grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and composition, with oral and listening as well. Ask the school which components count this year so the tutor can plan around them.

My child reads a lot but scores poorly in comprehension. Why?

Reading widely builds vocabulary, but comprehension papers also test a method: finding the evidence, answering exactly what is asked, and writing it in a full sentence. Many keen readers know the answer and still lose marks on how they write it. A tutor works on that method with short passages, then longer ones, so the reading habit starts to show in the marks.

How much does Primary 3 English tuition cost?

P3 is in our Lower Primary band: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Many P3 families choose a weekly 1.5-hour lesson, which leaves time for both a reading passage and a piece of writing.

Should English and composition be taught in the same lesson?

Usually yes in P3. Grammar and vocabulary stick when your child then uses them in writing straight away. A typical lesson might cover one comprehension skill and one short writing task, with a full composition every two or three weeks. If composition is the main worry, the tutor can shift the balance after the trial lesson.
