I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

Why P3 can feel like a jump

The work is not suddenly much harder. What changes is that it is marked, and there is a fourth subject to keep up with.

The first weighted assessment comes back with a mark far below what the P2 report book suggested.

Science answers name the right idea but do not explain it, so they lose marks.

Times tables from 6 to 9 are slow, which drags down every multiplication and division question.

English comprehension answers are copied straight from the passage, even when the question asks why.

Homework across four subjects piles up, and your child no longer finishes it in one sitting.

A plan that spreads support across the terms works better than a rush before each test.

What P3 tuition can cover

Most P3 families book one or two of these. The tutor follows the school's order and the dates of its weighted assessments.

Science: a new subject

The 2023 MOE syllabus is built on five themes, Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Energy and Interactions, taught across P3 to P6 in each school's order.

Topics covered
  • Reading a question and finding what it asks
  • Explaining an answer with a reason
  • Reading classification charts
  • Reading simple experiment set-ups
  • Learning the key words of each topic

Maths: bigger numbers and new measures

The P3 content in the 2021 MOE syllabus, where two-step word problems become common.

Topics covered
  • Numbers to 10,000
  • Times tables of 6, 7, 8 and 9
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Length, mass, volume and time
  • Area and perimeter
  • Angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, and bar graphs

English: longer texts and written answers

Comprehension and writing tasks get longer, and answers must be in your child's own words.

Topics covered
  • Inferring meaning from a passage
  • Answering in full sentences
  • Grammar and vocabulary in context
  • Planning a short composition from pictures
  • Editing for spelling and punctuation

Mother Tongue: marked for the first time

The same skills as before, now in weighted assessments, so oral and written practice both count.

Topics covered
  • Reading aloud and oral conversation
  • Vocabulary and sentence patterns from the textbook
  • Short comprehension passages
  • Writing a few sentences on a topic

A 2027 term plan across P3 subjects

A sample plan for a child with tuition in two subjects, built on the 2027 school terms. Your school's assessment plan sets the real dates.

  1. Term 1: 5 Jan to 12 Mar 2027Settle the new routineScience begins. Set a weekly slot for each tutored subject and a short daily times-table habit.
  2. Term 2: 22 Mar to 28 May 2027First marks inGo through each returned weighted assessment and pick the two weakest topics per subject.
  3. June holidays: 29 May to 27 Jun 2027Catch upLighter lessons on the weakest topics, plus reading for English and Mother Tongue.
  4. Term 3: 28 Jun to 3 Sep 2027Steady practiceKeep the weekly lessons on the topics that cost marks in Term 2.
  5. Term 4: 13 Sep to 19 Nov 2027The end-of-year examsRevise the whole year in each subject, using the school's past papers where available.

A school may hold up to one weighted assessment per subject in each term, and some leave a term unweighted. With four subjects, that can still mean several tests in a few weeks, so the plan should follow your school's dates, not the sample.

QuestionFor Primary 3
Which tutor suits P3?For one subject, a tutor who teaches that subject at lower primary. For two, a tutor who teaches both can keep one routine. Undergraduate and full-time tutors teach P3 often. An ex-MOE teacher costs more and suits a child who is well behind. Each profile shows qualifications, experience and subjects.
What does it cost? Each P3 subject is charged at Lower Primary rates: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Two subjects a week at 1.5 hours each with a full-time tutor come to S$420 to S$540 for eight lessons over four weeks.

Primary 3 Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 3 is the year two things change at once. Science starts, following MOE's 2023 Primary Science syllabus for P3 to P6, so your child now has four main subjects. And marks arrive: from P3 a school may hold up to one weighted assessment per subject in each term, and results appear on the report book as whole-number marks, with no class or level position. There is no mid-year exam. In Maths the numbers grow to 10,000, the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables are added, and area, perimeter, angles and bar graphs appear for the first time.

Read the full guide

Families often look for P3 tuition after the first weighted assessment comes back lower than expected. The usual choice is between one subject that is clearly behind and two subjects that both need steady help. Science is a common pick because it is new and the questions ask children to explain, not just recall. Maths is the other, because the tables and two-step word problems arrive together. English and Mother Tongue matter just as much, since P4 results decide subject levels for P5. The subject pages below cover each P3 syllabus. This page helps you plan the year across them.

A P3 task that mixes subjects well: a Science worksheet shows a plant kept in a dark cupboard and a plant on a sunny windowsill, and asks which grows better and why. Many children answer 'the one in the sun' and stop, which earns little. A tutor teaches a two-part answer: say what happens, then give the reason using the topic's key words. The same habit helps in English comprehension, where 'why' questions also need a reason in the child's own words, and in Maths, where a two-step word problem needs each step written out. Teaching one way to answer across subjects is one reason a single tutor for two P3 subjects can work well.

Primary 3 Tuition: frequently asked questions

Which subject should we get help with in P3?

Look at the first weighted assessment in each subject and at homework time. Science and Maths are the most common choices in P3, because Science is new and Maths adds the larger tables and longer word problems. If the Mother Tongue is not spoken at home, that often needs help too. Start with the subject that is furthest behind.

How much does Primary 3 tuition cost?

Rates for P3 follow our Lower Primary band, at S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour lessons in one subject with a full-time tutor come to S$210 to S$270.

How are P3 pupils assessed?

From P3, schools hold no more than one weighted assessment per subject in each term, and there are no mid-year exams at any primary level. Results go on the report book as marks rounded to whole numbers, and class and level positions are no longer shown. Each school sets its own dates and weights, so ask for the P3 assessment plan.

Can one tutor teach two P3 subjects?

Often, yes. Many lower primary tutors teach Maths and Science, or English and Maths, and one tutor for two subjects means one schedule to manage. The trade-off is depth: if one subject is far behind, a tutor who teaches only that subject may suit better. Each tutor profile lists the subjects the tutor teaches.
