I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

What trips children up in Primary 3 Chinese

P3 is the first year Chinese is marked in weighted assessments. Children who coped in P2 often lose marks in ways that are easy to spot.

Comprehension answers copy a whole line from the passage instead of answering the question asked.

A paragraph lists events in the wrong order, or jumps to the ending without saying how it happened.

The same few words carry every piece of writing, such as 很好, 很开心 and 然后.

Your child knows the characters but runs out of time in the first marked paper.

1 more

New words in a passage stop your child completely, instead of being worked out from the sentence.

These show up on the first marked papers of the year, which makes P3 a good time to see exactly what to fix.

A P3 Chinese plan for 2027, term by term

A sample plan around the 2027 school terms. Each school sets its own weighted assessment dates, so the tutor moves topics to fit your child's calendar.

  1. Term 1: 5 Jan to 12 Mar 2027Reading habit and first paragraphsA daily reading routine and short paragraphs with a clear order of events, before the first weighted assessment.
  2. Term 2: 22 Mar to 28 May 2027Comprehension answersFinding the answer in the passage and writing it as a full sentence. Review of the term 1 paper.
  3. June holidays: 29 May to 27 Jun 2027Read more, speak moreA short storybook read together, with your child retelling each chapter aloud.
  4. Term 3: 28 Jun to 3 Sep 2027Richer paragraphsAdding feelings, speech and description to paragraphs, and working out new words from context.
  5. Term 4: 13 Sep to 19 Nov 2027Year-end revisionMixed practice in the school's paper format, then a review of every marked paper from the year.

Lesson time in school is lower in P3 than in P2, so a steady weekly lesson usually matters more than extra lessons just before a test.

Primary 3 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 3 starts the second stage of the foundation stage in MOE's primary Chinese course, covering P3 and P4. The 2024 curriculum reached P3 in 2026, so a P3 child in 2027 is on the 《欢乐伙伴2.0》 textbooks. Two things change at once. Weighted assessments begin, with no more than one per subject in each school term. And weekly Chinese lesson time in school drops from about 6 hours in P2 to about 4.5 hours in P3, so there is less class practice just as marks start to count. Writing grows from sentences to short paragraphs (写段), and reading asks children to find details and work out word meanings from the passage.

Children who need more support in P3 and P4 may be placed in reinforcement modules (强化单元), which MOE runs under the ABLE华文我也行 scheme before the core lessons. Most children stay in the regular course and simply find P3 harder than P2. A P3 Chinese tutor reads your child's first marked papers, works out where marks went, and teaches to that: answering comprehension questions in full sentences, putting a paragraph in order, and using a dictionary to check words.

For parents who do not read Chinese, the tutor can translate the teacher's comments and explain what each section of the paper was testing. The school sets the format and timing of each weighted assessment, so lessons follow your child's own school calendar.

A P3 comprehension question might read: 为什么小明那天很开心? The passage says that Xiaoming's grandmother came to visit and brought his favourite cake. Many children copy the whole sentence about the grandmother, or write only 奶奶来了. A tutor teaches a two-step method. First, find the cause (起因) in the passage and underline it. Second, answer in a full sentence that starts from the question: 小明那天很开心,因为奶奶来看他,还带来了他最爱吃的蛋糕。 The answer now shows the reason clearly and uses the question's own words, which is what markers look for. Practised on a few short passages a week, this habit carries straight into the longer open-ended questions of P5 and P6.

Primary 3 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is Chinese tested in P3?

From P3 schools may set at most one weighted assessment per subject each term, plus a year-end exam. There is no mid-year exam at primary any more. Each school sets its own format and timing, so a tutor asks to see your child's school papers and plans lessons around the school's calendar rather than a generic one.

What are reinforcement modules in P3 Chinese?

They are extra lessons for children who need more help in P3 and P4, run under MOE's ABLE华文我也行 scheme and taught before the core lessons. If your child is placed in one, a tutor can work in step with it, so the same weak areas are practised at home and in school.

Why is my child's P3 Chinese weaker than P2?

Partly because the demands change, and partly because there is less time. Weekly Chinese lessons in school fall from about 6 hours in P2 to about 4.5 hours in P3, while reading and writing tasks get longer. A weekly tutor lesson puts back some of that practice time.

Does a tutor teach the school's textbook or extra material?

Both. The tutor uses your child's 欢乐伙伴2.0 lessons as the base, because tests are built on them, then adds unseen passages and short writing tasks at the same level. That way your child practises the skill, not only the memorised lesson.

How much does Primary 3 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$25 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
