Signs your child needs help with Sec 3 Chinese
Upper secondary Chinese rewards precise reading and full answers. These are the problems that show up in Sec 3 tests.
Open-ended comprehension answers copy a sentence from the passage instead of answering in your child's own words.
Questions that ask why or what the writer implies get an answer about what happened.
Multiple-choice questions on practical texts are lost to a detail such as a date, a price or a condition.
Timed compositions run out of time, so the ending is rushed or missing.
1 more
In the oral conversation your child agrees with every examiner question and never develops a point.
Each of these can be practised directly, and Sec 3 leaves a full year before the national paper.

Inside the G3 language use and comprehension paper
Paper 2 of G3 Chinese (K320) is 1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks and 35% of the subject. This is the SEAB blueprint, section by section, with what to practise in Sec 3 for each.
Comprehension 2 alone is worth half of Paper 2, so most Sec 3 lessons spend time there.
| Section | Format | Questions | Marks | What Sec 3 practises |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloze (综合填空) | Multiple choice on one passage | 5 | 5 (2.5%) | Choosing between near-synonyms from the context |
| Word replacement (词语替换) | Open-ended on one passage | 5 | 10 (5%) | Writing the correct word, not just spotting the wrong one |
| Comprehension 1 | Multiple choice on 2 or 3 practical texts such as adverts, flyers and news reports | 10 | 20 (10%) | Reading details: dates, conditions and exceptions |
| Comprehension 2 | Open-ended questions on 2 passages | 10 | 35 (17.5%) | Inference and answers in your own words |

Secondary 3 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 3 Chinese (中三华文) starts the run-up to the national paper. A student in Sec 3 in 2027 sits the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) in 2028, and at G3 that means Chinese Language K320. Its language use and comprehension paper has 30 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, and the open-ended questions on two passages alone carry 35 of the 70 marks. Those answers need inference and your child's own words, which is a different skill from finding a sentence in the passage. The oral conversation is worth 40 of the 50 oral marks.
Read the full guide
In Sec 3 a tutor reads with your child, not for them. Lessons take one passage at a time: what the question really asks, where the evidence is, and how to put it in a complete sentence without copying. Writing practice moves to timed emails and compositions, marked against the SEAB descriptors. For the oral, the tutor plays short video clips and asks follow-up questions the way an examiner does. If your child takes G2 Chinese, lessons follow the K220 paper instead. Each lesson ends with one marked task, so you can see which section of the paper is improving and which still needs time.
Here is the kind of open-ended question that costs students in Sec 3 marks. A passage describes a grandmother who keeps cooking for her grandson's family, though he keeps telling her to rest. The question asks: 为什么奶奶坚持天天做饭?Many students copy the line where she says 我闲不下来, which only repeats the passage. A fuller answer explains her reasons in the student's own words: cooking lets her feel useful, and it is the way she shows care for the family. A tutor teaches your child to underline the evidence, ask what it shows about the character, and write one complete sentence per mark. Comprehension 2 in the G3 paper has 10 questions worth 35 marks, so this one habit carries real weight.

TSS stands out compared to other agencies I’ve tried. Everything was smooth from finding a tutor to starting lessons.
I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

Secondary 3 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions
When will my Sec 3 child sit the national Chinese paper?
A student in Sec 3 in 2027 sits the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) in 2028. SEAB holds the Mother Tongue written papers in September, in one sitting for all levels, with the oral and listening before the written papers. At G3, Chinese is syllabus K320. Sec 3 is therefore the last full year before the paper.
Is there still a mid-year Chinese paper in Sec 4?
Not under the SEC. For the O-Level, SEAB held Mother Tongue written papers in two sittings, one at mid-year and one in the main written period. From 2027 the SEC has a single September sitting for G1, G2 and G3 Chinese and G3 Higher Chinese. Plans built around an early mid-year sitting no longer apply to students sitting the SEC.
How is the Chinese oral marked at G3?
Students get 10 minutes to read a passage silently and watch a short video clip. They then read the passage aloud, worth 10 marks, and hold a conversation with the examiner based on the clip and the examiner's questions, worth 40 marks. The topics are drawn from daily life. Together with listening, the oral is 35% of the subject.
How is G2 Chinese different in upper secondary?
The G2 paper (K220) has shorter writing, an email of at least 120 characters and a composition of at least 240. Its language use and comprehension paper has 28 questions, is taken on a computer, and is worth 30%. Weightings differ from G3, so a tutor should work from the K220 syllabus if that is your child's level.
How much does Secondary 3 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$35 to S$95 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
