What costs marks in PSLE Chinese

By P6 most children know enough Chinese. Marks are usually lost to timing, thin compositions and nerves in the oral.

The composition is unfinished after 50 minutes because too much time went into the opening.

Paper 2 runs out of time before the open-ended reading section, which carries the most marks.

Open-ended answers give one point when the question asks for two.

In the oral conversation, answers stop at yes or no without a reason or example.

1 more

Reading aloud loses marks for wrong tones on characters your child knows well.

These are exam-year problems, and timed practice with careful review of each paper is the usual remedy.

Children in Foundation Chinese sit 0025 instead, and children in Higher Chinese sit 0015, which has two written papers and no oral. The PSLE Score adds the ALs of four subjects, from 4 to 32, so a one-band move in Chinese moves the total by one point. A P6 child in 2027 is on the 2015 curriculum.

In P6 the content is familiar, so lessons shift to timed papers and the parts with the most marks at stake. A P6 Chinese tutor runs 50-minute compositions under exam conditions, marks them against what the paper asks, and returns them before the next lesson. Paper 2 is 1 hour 40 minutes and 90 marks, so the tutor trains pacing as well as accuracy, and spends time on the open-ended reading section, worth 32 marks. Oral practice uses short video clips and a 10-minute preparation window, as in the real exam. If you do not speak Chinese, ask the tutor for a short monthly summary in English: the AL range of recent papers, and which part is improving or slipping.

In the PSLE oral, your child watches a short video clip, say, students sorting rubbish into recycling bins at school, and then talks about it with the examiner. A common answer is one line: 他们在回收东西。 A tutor teaches a three-part reply. First, what the clip shows, with detail: who, where and what they are doing. Second, a view with a reason: 我觉得回收很重要,因为可以减少垃圾。 Third, a personal example: 我家每个星期都把旧报纸拿去回收。 The examiner then asks follow-up questions, and a child with this habit always has something to add. Practised on a new clip each week, the conversation, worth 30 of the 50 oral marks, stops being the part your child dreads.

Primary 6 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is PSLE Chinese graded?

Chinese gets an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8 based on your child's overall percentage: AL1 is 90% and above, AL2 85% to 89%, AL3 80% to 84%, AL4 75% to 79%, AL5 65% to 74%, AL6 45% to 64%. The four subject ALs add up to the PSLE Score, from 4 to 32.

Can my child use a dictionary in PSLE Chinese?

Yes, in Paper 1 Writing, where SEAB allows a dictionary on its approved list. It helps to check a character, but looking up too many words eats into 50 minutes. A tutor sets timed compositions with the dictionary on the table, so your child learns when it is worth opening.

How does Higher Chinese affect secondary school posting?

Students with a Distinction, Merit or Pass in Higher Chinese and a PSLE Score of 14 or better get a posting advantage to SAP schools. Among applicants with the same score for a SAP school, better Higher Chinese grades are allocated places first. For Higher Chinese lessons, see our Higher Chinese tuition page.

My child takes Foundation Chinese. What does the PSLE look like?

PSLE Foundation Chinese (0025) has a 40-minute language and reading paper worth 15%, an oral of about 10 minutes worth 55%, and a listening paper of about 30 minutes worth 30%. Grades A, B and C count as AL6, AL7 and AL8. Lessons focus on the oral and listening, which carry 85%.

Is it too late to start Chinese tuition in P6?

It is not too late, but the plan is different. In P6 a tutor does not try to rebuild vocabulary from scratch. The focus is on timed papers, the oral and the open-ended reading section, where focused practice can still lift marks within months. Outcomes vary by starting point and effort.

How much does Primary 6 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$30 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
