Why P4 Chinese worries parents

P4 results feed the school's recommendation for the P5 Chinese course. These are the signs that your child may need help this year.

Written paragraphs list one event after another, with no feelings, speech or description.

Comprehension answers lift words from the passage without showing they understood the question.

Weighted assessment marks in Chinese sit well below your child's English and Maths.

Reading aloud is slow and loses marks for wrong tones or skipped characters.

You are unsure whether your child should aim for Chinese, Higher Chinese or Foundation Chinese in P5.

The P5 course is recommended from P4 results, so this is the year when steady help has the clearest payoff.

Foundation Chinese, Chinese or Higher Chinese: the P5 choice

From P5, each Chinese course leads to its own PSLE paper. This is how the three compare, from MOE's syllabus and SEAB's PSLE syllabuses.

Higher Chinese grades are used for posting advantage to SAP schools for students with a PSLE Score of 14 or better. The school can adjust the course at the end of P5.

Primary 4 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 4 is the last year of the foundation stage in MOE's primary Chinese course. In 2027 it is also the first P4 year on the 2024 curriculum and the 《欢乐伙伴2.0》 textbooks. At the end of P4 the school recommends a subject combination from the year's results, and you fill in an option form. For Chinese, the P5 and P6 orientation stage (定向阶段) offers three courses: Foundation Chinese (基础华文) for children who find Chinese hard, Chinese (华文) for most children, and Higher Chinese (高级华文) for children who are strong in it. Each course leads to a different PSLE paper with its own format. P4 results therefore shape the Chinese your child will sit at the PSLE.

This is why many parents start Chinese tuition in P4, especially in homes where Chinese is rarely spoken. A P4 Chinese tutor looks at your child's weighted assessment papers and the school's year-end exam format, then works on the parts that cost the most marks, usually written paragraphs that only list events, and comprehension answers copied straight from the passage. The tutor can also explain in English what each P5 option means, so you can read the school's recommendation with some context.

Some families want their child to stay in Chinese rather than drop to Foundation, and others ask whether Higher Chinese is realistic. A tutor who has taught upper primary can give you an honest view based on the work in front of them.

Take a common P4 writing task: write about a time you helped someone. A typical first draft reads like a list: I saw an old lady, I helped her carry her bag, she said thank you, I went home. A tutor shows your child how to slow down the middle. Add what the lady looked like (她提着两大袋菜,走得很慢), what your child said (婆婆,我帮您拿吧), and how your child felt afterwards (我心里甜甜的). The events stay the same, but the piece now has speech, description and feeling. Practised this way every week, a P4 child arrives in P5 able to fill a composition with detail rather than padding.

Primary 4 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is the P5 Chinese course decided?

At the end of P4 the school recommends a subject combination based on the year-end results, and you fill in an option form with your preference. For Chinese, the options in P5 are Foundation Chinese, Chinese or Higher Chinese. The school reviews subject levels again at the end of P5 and can adjust them.

What does Higher Chinese need from a P4 child?

MOE describes Higher Chinese as the course for children who are strong in Chinese. At the PSLE, Higher Chinese (0015) is all reading and writing: a narrative of more than 200 characters and a 60-mark language and comprehension paper. For details on that subject, see our Higher Chinese tuition page.

Should my child drop to Foundation Chinese?

That is a decision for your family and the school, and it is worth understanding the trade-off. Foundation Chinese has less class time and a PSLE paper weighted heavily on oral and listening, but its top grade counts as AL6 in the PSLE Score. A tutor can show you where your child stands so the choice is informed.

When in P4 should Chinese tuition start?

As early in the year as possible. Writing and vocabulary build slowly, and the results that shape the P5 recommendation come from the whole year. Starting in Term 1 gives your child four terms of steady work before the year-end exam.

How much does Primary 4 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$25 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
