Where Primary 2 Chinese starts to slip

P2 asks children to read new text and write their own sentences, not just repeat the textbook. These are the usual warning signs.

Your child reads a practised lesson smoothly but stops at every second character in a new passage.

Reading relies on the hanyu pinyin above the characters, so the characters themselves are not being learned.

Sentences on paper miss a part, such as who did the action, or run on without a full stop.

A picture writing task gets one short sentence when the teacher expected three or four.

1 more

Look-alike characters keep getting swapped in dictation, such as 人 and 入.

P2 has no weighted assessments, so these can be fixed without the pressure of marks before P3 begins.

What changes from P2 to P3 Chinese

A P2 child in 2027 moves to P3 in 2028. These are the changes MOE has set out, so you can plan the year ahead.

Less class time and the first marked tests arrive together in P3, so the P2 year is the easier time to make reading and writing secure.

Primary 2 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 2 completes the first stage of MOE's primary Chinese course, the P1 and P2 years of the foundation stage. In 2027 P2 uses the 2024 curriculum and the 《欢乐伙伴2.0》 textbooks, which reached P2 in 2025. Reading moves from single characters and children's songs (儿歌) to short stories and fables (寓言), and writing moves from copying characters to writing complete sentences with the right punctuation. P2 still has no weighted assessments or exams. That changes in P3, when schools can set one weighted assessment per subject each term. P2 is therefore the calmest year to close gaps in reading and character writing, before results start to count in the report book.

Read the full guide

Many P2 children can read a textbook lesson they have practised but stall on a new passage, because they lean on the hanyu pinyin printed above the characters or guess from the pictures. A P2 Chinese tutor works on reading new text aloud with the right pace, on telling apart characters that look alike, and on building one clear sentence into three.

For parents who are not confident in Chinese, the tutor can set a ten-minute home routine that needs no Chinese from you: your child reads aloud to you from a marked page, and you tick it off. Lessons follow your child's school textbook, so the characters practised are the ones in that week's dictation (听写) list if the school gives one.

A typical P2 writing task shows a picture of children at a playground and asks for a few sentences. Many children write 小朋友在玩 and stop. A tutor teaches a three-question frame: 谁 (who), 在哪里 (where), 做什么 (doing what). Your child first answers each question aloud, then writes it down: 星期六下午,我和弟弟在公园里玩。 Then the tutor adds a feeling with 因为: 我们很开心,因为天气很好。 Two sentences become four, each one complete, with a comma and a full stop in the right places. The same frame later becomes the opening of a P3 paragraph, so the habit carries forward.

Primary 2 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is P2 too early for Chinese tuition?

Not if reading or writing is already behind. P2 is the last year without weighted assessments, and from P3 schools can set one per subject each term. Reading fluency and character writing take months to build, so starting in P2 means your child begins P3 ready, rather than catching up while being marked.

My child can read the textbook. Why does the teacher say reading is weak?

A child who has heard a lesson many times can recite it while looking at the page. The test is an unseen passage. A tutor checks this in the first lesson with a short story your child has not seen, and you will hear quickly where the reading stops.

How can I help with Chinese homework if I do not read Chinese?

You can still keep the routine. The tutor marks a page for your child to read aloud each day and a set of characters to write. Your job is to listen, tick the box and note anything your child stumbled on. The tutor picks up from that note in the next lesson.

How long should a P2 Chinese lesson be?

Most P2 children manage an hour well, split between reading, characters and a short writing task. If your child also needs speaking practice because Chinese is rarely used at home, a lesson of 1.5 hours once a week, or two shorter lessons, can work better. The tutor will suggest a pattern after the first lesson.

How much does Primary 2 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$25 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
