Where Primary 5 Chinese marks are lost
In P5 school papers start to look like the PSLE. The weak spots below show up in most P5 children who struggle with Chinese.
Compositions are short and flat, with the same handful of words and no clear high point.
Open-ended comprehension answers are too brief to earn full marks, or answer a different question.
Written interaction tasks, such as replying to a message, miss what the reader actually asked for.
In the oral, your child goes quiet after one sentence about the video clip.
1 more
Listening questions on announcements and advertisements are missed because the key detail went past too fast.
Each of these is a skill that improves with regular, marked practice, and P5 still leaves time for it.

Primary 5 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 5 begins the orientation stage of primary Chinese, where children take Foundation Chinese, Chinese or Higher Chinese. A P5 child in 2027 is still on the 2015 curriculum and its 《欢乐伙伴》 textbooks, because the 2024 curriculum only reaches P5 in 2028. For the standard Chinese course, MOE's stated emphasis in P5 and P6 is oral interaction, reading, writing and written interaction (书面互动), such as replying to a message or an email.
Read the full guide
The PSLE Chinese paper (0005) tests all of these: a composition, a long language and comprehension paper, an oral with a video clip, and a listening paper. P5 is when those papers become the frame for schoolwork, and the school reviews subject levels again at the end of the year.
The gap in P5 is usually writing. A child who scored well in lower primary by memorising characters can still write a composition that is short, flat and repeats the same words. A P5 Chinese tutor marks compositions line by line, builds a bank of useful phrases and idioms (成语) by theme, and teaches a simple plan before writing: what happened, how the character felt, and how it ended. Comprehension work moves to open-ended answers in your child's own words.
For Foundation Chinese, the tutor focuses on oral and listening, which carry 85% of that PSLE paper. Parents who do not read Chinese can still follow progress: ask the tutor to keep a list of marks per composition so you can see the trend.
Written interaction is a part of P5 Chinese that many parents have never heard of. A typical task gives your child a short message, for example a friend asking to borrow a storybook and to meet at the library on Saturday, and asks for a reply. Children often write about something else, or answer only half the message. A tutor teaches your child to underline every question in the message first: which book, which day, what time. The reply then answers each one in turn, in a friendly tone, and closes properly. In the PSLE, written interaction sits inside Paper 2's open-ended reading section, which carries 32 marks, so a careful habit here is worth building early.

Primary 5 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions
How is P5 Foundation Chinese different from Chinese?
Foundation Chinese has about 2.5 hours of school lessons a week, against about 4.5 for Chinese. Its PSLE paper (0025) has no composition: a 15% language and reading paper, a 55% oral and a 30% listening paper. Grades A, B and C count as AL6, AL7 and AL8. A tutor teaches to the course your child actually takes.
Can my child's Chinese level change after P5?
Yes. MOE says the school assesses each child at the end of P5 and adjusts subject levels where needed, and in P6 your child takes the combination the school recommends. So P5 results matter for the Chinese course your child sits at the PSLE, not only for the report book.
Is my child's P5 textbook the new 欢乐伙伴2.0?
Not in 2027. MOE's 2024 curriculum is being phased in one level a year and reaches P5 in 2028. A P5 child in 2027 is on the 2015 curriculum and its 欢乐伙伴 textbooks. The PSLE Chinese paper format has been in use since 2017.
How many Chinese lessons a week does a P5 child need?
One lesson of 1.5 hours a week suits most P5 children, with one composition written at home and marked by the tutor between lessons. If oral is the main weakness, a short second session focused only on speaking can help more than a longer single lesson.
How much does Primary 5 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$30 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
