Primary 5 Tuition by subject

Each subject has its own page, with that year's syllabus, what tends to go wrong and the tutor rates.

Where P5 tends to get harder

The step from P4 to P5 is bigger than most families expect, in every subject at once.

Maths marks drop as percentage and rate questions need several steps set out in order.

Science questions describe an experiment your child has never seen and ask what it shows.

English compositions are marked more strictly on detail and language than in P4.

Mother Tongue passages get longer, and comprehension answers need full sentences in the language.

Homework and revision across four subjects no longer fit in the time after school.

With the end-of-P5 review and the PSLE ahead, P5 is the year to close gaps rather than carry them into P6.

What P5 tuition can cover

A P5 tutor teaches to the level your child takes in each subject, Standard or Foundation, and keeps the PSLE in view.

Maths: the new upper primary topics

The P5 Standard content in the 2021 MOE syllabus. Foundation Maths revisits P1 to P4 ideas and adds a subset of these.

Topics covered
  • Numbers to 10 million and the four operations
  • Fraction and division, and multiplying fractions
  • Percentage
  • Rate
  • Area of a triangle and volume of cubes and cuboids
  • Angles, triangles, parallelograms, rhombuses and trapeziums

Science: applying ideas

P5 Science is taken at Standard or Foundation level, and questions ask children to use what they know on new set-ups.

Topics covered
  • Reading experiment set-ups and results
  • Writing answers with a cause and an effect
  • Using the key words markers look for
  • Interpreting graphs and tables
  • Correcting returned school papers

English: writing and comprehension

The written papers carry the most marks, so most English tuition time goes here.

Topics covered
  • Composition planning and paragraphing
  • Vivid description and dialogue
  • Writing for a given purpose and reader
  • Open-ended comprehension
  • Grammar, vocabulary and editing

Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue

Oral, listening, composition and comprehension, at the level your child takes.

Topics covered
  • Oral reading and conversation
  • Listening comprehension practice
  • Composition vocabulary and structure
  • Longer comprehension passages

The PSLE papers behind each P5 subject

Every P5 subject leads to a PSLE paper at the level your child sits in P6. These are SEAB's subject codes for the formats examined in 2026.

SEAB marks Mathematics, Science and their Foundation papers as revised for 2026. A tutor should work from materials for the paper your child will sit, not a general P5 workbook.

Primary 5 Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 5 is the first upper primary year and the start of the PSLE syllabus proper. Your child takes English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science, each at Standard or Foundation level, in the combination chosen after P4. Some children also take Higher Mother Tongue. At the end of P5 the school reviews how your child is coping and may change subject levels for P6. In Maths, P5 Standard brings numbers to 10 million, fraction and division, percentage, rate, area of a triangle, volume of cubes and cuboids, and angle properties. Each of the four subjects is sat at the PSLE at the end of P6.

Read the full guide

P5 is when tuition demand climbs. Families start because the new topics are heavy, because the end-of-P5 review can change subject levels, and because the PSLE year is next. The common plans are one subject that has fallen behind, or two subjects a week, often Maths with Science, since both lean on written working and explanations. Rates move up to our Upper Primary band from P5. If you plan to keep one tutor through P6, check that the profile lists both years. The subject pages below cover each P5 syllabus, and the PSLE preparation page covers the exam as a whole.

Planning two P5 subjects is mostly about the timetable. Say Maths and Science both need help. One option is two separate weekly lessons of 1.5 hours, on days with fewer school activities, so neither subject is squeezed. Another is one tutor who teaches both, splitting a longer lesson, which saves travel but can let the weaker subject take over.

A tutor working on a P5 rate question, such as a tap filling 12 litres in 3 minutes and how long it takes to fill 30 litres, will ask your child to find the rate per minute first, 4 litres, then divide. A Science lesson that week might ask how a variable was kept the same. Both lean on one habit: write each step.

Primary 5 Tuition: frequently asked questions

Which subjects do P5 families usually get help with?

Maths and Science are the most common, since P5 brings several of the heaviest PSLE topics and both need clear written working. English composition and the Mother Tongue come next, especially where the language is not used at home. Look at the latest school results and start with the subject furthest from where your child needs to be by the end of P5.

How much does Primary 5 tuition cost?

Rates for P5 follow our Upper Primary band, at S$30 to S$40 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour lessons in one subject with an undergraduate tutor come to S$180 to S$240.

Can subject levels change after P5?

Yes. At the end of P5 the school assesses how your child is coping with each subject and adjusts levels if needed. In P6 your child takes the combination the school recommends and sits the PSLE in it. If a change is likely, tell the tutor, so lessons follow the level your child will actually sit.

How does the PSLE score my child?

Each of the four PSLE subjects gets an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, and the PSLE Score is the sum, from 4 to 32, where 4 is the strongest. For Standard subjects, AL1 is 90% and above. Foundation subjects are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6, AL7 and AL8.
