PSLE Tamil follows the same four-paper structure as the other Mother Tongue subjects: composition (karuthurai), comprehension (vinaakkal), listening, and oral (vai mozhi). Higher Tamil is taken in addition by selected students at MOE-designated SAP-equivalent tracks. The PSLE Tamil tutor pool in Singapore is the smallest of the Mother Tongue subjects, which means matching lead times are longer (typically 7 to 14 days) and rates run slightly higher than English or Math at the same level. The dominant gap-creator across PSLE Tamil is karuthurai vocabulary range.
Many Tamil-stream PSLE students grow up with English as the dominant home language and Tamil only with grandparents or in weekend community settings, which means writing in formal-register Tamil under exam conditions is a stretch. Students who plateau at AL5 typically have one of three issues: vocabulary range too narrow for descriptive writing, weak grasp of formal-register Tamil grammar (sandhi rules, verb conjugation), or vai mozhi delivery that is hesitant or pronunciation-uneven.
