Mother Tongue Language (MTL)
Compulsory PSLE / O-Level / A-Level second language
Mother Tongue Language (MTL) is the compulsory second-language subject in Singapore's national exams: Chinese (CL), Malay (ML), Tamil (TL), or Non-Tamil Indian Languages (Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati).
In context
Each ethnic group typically takes a designated MTL. MTL standards: Higher Mother Tongue (HMTL, used for IP / top-school admissions), Standard MTL, MTL B, Foundation MTL.
