Primary English in Singapore runs on the MOE STELLAR 2.0 curriculum, and the assessment shape changes more than any other subject across the six years. Primary 1 english tuition is mostly foundational: phonics, sight words, sentence construction and reading confidence, because P1 and P2 have no weighted exams and the goal is building the habits everything later depends on. Is English tuition for Primary 1 worth it, or too early?
P1 tuition is worth it when it targets foundations, phonics, reading habits and oral confidence, rather than drilling worksheets. There are no weighted exams in P1-P2, so the win is building the reading engine that P3-P6 grading will draw on. If your child is already a keen reader, P1 tuition is usually unnecessary.
How is PSLE English tuition different from regular primary English tuition?
From P5, lessons train the exact PSLE components: situational writing conventions, comprehension cloze, synthesis and transformation, listening comprehension, and the oral examination. The content knowledge is the same English, but the marks come from format technique, and that is what the PSLE years drill.
