What P4 parents are usually worried about

Most P4 concerns trace back to one question: will the results be enough for the subject levels we want in P5?

One subject sits near the pass mark in weighted assessments, and the end-of-year exam is a few months away.

Decimals and fractions are treated like whole numbers, so P4 Maths marks drop after the first term.

Science answers are memorised, but questions about an unfamiliar set-up go blank.

English compositions are short and stick to the pictures, with little detail or dialogue.

1 more

Mother Tongue oral and composition marks fall behind the other subjects.

P4 gives a full year to work on these, and the option form arrives only at the end of it.

What P4 tuition can cover

The tutor follows the school's topics and plans backwards from the end-of-year exams that feed the P5 recommendation.

  • Decimals up to 3 decimal places
  • Angles, rectangles and squares, line symmetry and nets

  • Reading tables and graphs from experiments
  • Explaining what was changed and kept the same
  • Applying a topic to an unfamiliar example
  • Reviewing returned school papers

How the end of P4 shapes P5 and P6

What MOE's subject-based banding rules mean for a P4 family, by result.

Your child takes the chosen combination in P5. At the end of P5 the school checks how your child is coping and may adjust subject levels, and in P6 your child takes the combination the school recommends. At the PSLE, Foundation grades A, B and C count as AL6, AL7 and AL8.

QuestionFor Primary 4
Which tutor suits P4?A tutor who has taught P4 and P5 and knows what the Standard syllabus expects next. For a borderline subject, a full-time tutor or an ex-MOE teacher can make a big difference in one year. For steady practice, an undergraduate tutor is often enough. Profiles show qualifications, experience and levels taught.
What does it cost? Each P4 subject is charged at Lower Primary rates: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Two subjects a week at 1.5 hours each with an undergraduate tutor come to S$300 to S$420 for eight lessons over four weeks.
How does it start?Tell us the school, the subjects and the latest marks, and say if a subject is near the pass mark. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum number of lessons. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the tutor is not the right fit, we re-match you free.

Primary 4 Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 4 carries more weight than its place in the middle suggests. At the end of the year, the school uses your child's P4 exam results to recommend which subjects to take at Standard or Foundation level in P5 and P6, and you fill in an option form. A child who passes 3 or more subjects is offered all four at Standard. A child who passes 2 or fewer can choose any mix. In Maths, P4 brings numbers to 100,000, factors and multiples, mixed numbers, decimals to three places, angles in degrees, symmetry, nets and pie charts. It is the last year of the common P1 to P4 Maths syllabus.

Because of that decision, P4 is when many families who held off on tuition decide to start. Some want to make sure a borderline subject passes. Others want a child secure in fractions, decimals and Science explanations before upper primary. Two subjects a week is common in P4, often Maths with Science or English with Mother Tongue. P4 is also the last year in our Lower Primary rate band, so a year of help costs less than the same help in P5. The subject pages below go through each P4 syllabus. This page covers the year and the banding decision as a whole.

Here is how a P4 tutor might split time for a child with Maths at 60 and Science at 48 in the Term 2 weighted assessments. Science is closer to the pass line, so it gets the first lesson each week. The tutor goes through the returned paper, finds that most lost marks were on explaining answers rather than on knowing facts, and drills a simple pattern: state the observation, then give the reason with the key word. Maths gets the second lesson, on decimals to three places, the topic behind most of its errors. Before the end-of-year exams, both lessons switch to the school's past papers. The split follows the marks, and it changes when they do.

Primary 4 Tuition: frequently asked questions

What happens at the end of Primary 4?

Your child sits the school exams, and the school recommends a subject combination for P5 based on those results. You then fill in an option form with your preferred combination. A child who passes 3 or more subjects is offered all four at Standard level. A child who passes 2 or fewer can choose any mix of Standard and Foundation subjects.

How much does Primary 4 tuition cost?

Rates for P4, the last year of our Lower Primary band, are S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. From P5, Upper Primary rates apply, starting at S$30 to S$40 an hour.

Is Foundation level a bad outcome?

No. Foundation subjects cover fewer topics and suit a child who needs more time on the basics. At the PSLE they are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6, AL7 and AL8 in the PSLE Score. The school also reviews subject levels at the end of P5. Talk to the school about what suits your child, subject by subject.

Should we do one subject or two in P4?

If one subject is near the pass mark, put the time there first, since passes decide what the school offers. If two subjects are weak, two lessons a week is common in P4 and still costs Lower Primary rates. A child who is doing well may only need a term of help on one topic, such as decimals or composition.
