PSLE Malay (Bahasa Melayu) follows the same four-paper structure as the other PSLE Mother Tongue subjects. Paper 1 is karangan (composition), Paper 2 is bahagian language use and pemahaman comprehension (Booklets A and B), Paper 3 is mendengar (listening), Paper 4 is lisan (oral). Higher Malay (Bahasa Melayu Tinggi) is taken in addition by selected students at SAP-equivalent schools and at schools with strong Mother Tongue tracks.
The pool of qualified PSLE Malay tutors in Singapore is small relative to demand, particularly during the August to October PSLE period when families realise mid-year that the Malay grade is dragging the overall PSLE score. The dominant gap-creator is karangan content development. Students who plateau at AL5 typically have one of three issues: vocabulary range too narrow for descriptive writing, weak grasp of formal-register Malay (which differs from the colloquial Malay spoken at home), or lisan delivery that is hesitant under exam conditions.
Our PSLE Malay tutors run weekly sessions that combine karangan practice (with a different theme each fortnight), pemahaman drilling on past PSLE papers, and lisan coaching with stimulus-card practice. Vocabulary expansion uses topic banks (school life, family, environment, helping others) plus formal-register Malay structures (kata sendi, ayat majmuk). Tutors are NIE-trained Malay-language specialists, ex-MOE Malay teachers or graduates with Malay Studies majors from NUS or NTU. We also have access to a panel of bilingual Malay tutors who can support students from English-dominant home environments where Malay is the second-strongest language.
A practical detail: PSLE Malay lisan is scored on three dimensions (pronunciation, fluency, content depth), and the most consistent loss area is content depth on the stimulus-based conversation. Students who answer in 2 to 3 sentences cap at 14 out of 20, while students who can extend to a personal example, a reason and a closing reflection routinely score 17 to 19. Our tutors drill the structured response framework (pendapat, sebab, contoh, kesimpulan) over 8 to 12 weeks, with weekly recorded practice the parent can listen back to.
The same drill applies for Higher Malay students taking the harder lisan paper. Karangan vocabulary expansion uses both the SEAB word list and the periodic Berita Harian student-edition articles, which keep the register modern and exam-relevant rather than purely textbook.
Common PSLE Malay Struggles We Fix
PSLE Malay losses cluster in karangan and lisan. The patterns we see most often:
Karangan stays at the band 3 mark range because vocabulary is repetitive and the writing is too colloquial for the formal exam register.
Pemahaman Open-Ended answers are partially correct but lifted from the passage rather than paraphrased.
Lisan planned reading is hesitant or mispronounces formal Malay words, capping the mark.
Stimulus-based lisan conversation lacks structured response (pendapat, sebab, contoh).
Mendengar comprehension scores drop on the second-half questions where information density rises.
Confusion between formal-register Malay required in writing and the colloquial Malay used at home.
Our PSLE Malay programme drills these specific areas with weekly skill-targeting and detailed karangan feedback in Malay.

What Our Parents Say

- Mrs. Salmah
Parent from Tampines
"Higher Malay was my hardest subject. The tutor was a former MOE Malay teacher and the karangan feedback was line by line. I scored Distinction in the end."
- Iman
PSLE student from Bedok
