The tutor catalogue made it super easy to choose a tutor, and Alicia was really helpful throughout the whole process. Definitely recommend TSS.

What changes in Primary 5 Science

P5 Science adds several new topic areas at once, and the questions look much more like PSLE questions. These are the struggles parents usually notice.

Circuit diagrams: your child cannot tell whether a bulb lights up because an open switch or a gap in the circuit is missed.

Bulbs in series and in parallel are confused, so predictions about brightness or a fused bulb are wrong.

Evaporation and boiling are treated as the same thing, so questions on drying clothes get answers about 100°C.

Pollination and fertilisation are mixed up, or seed dispersal answers do not link the fruit's feature to how it travels.

Questions on how plants, fish and humans take in oxygen get the answer that plants do not take in oxygen.

These ideas return in PSLE questions, so P5 is the year to understand them rather than memorise them.

How PSLE Achievement Levels work

Each subject gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8. The four ALs add up to the PSLE score, from 4 to 32.

  1. AL190 and above
  2. AL285 to 89
  3. AL380 to 84
  4. AL475 to 79
  5. AL565 to 74
  6. AL645 to 64
  7. AL720 to 44
  8. AL8Below 20

The P5 Standard Science syllabus

Under the 2023 MOE syllabus, P5 covers reproduction, water and the water cycle, the human and plant transport systems, and electrical systems. Cells are no longer a separate topic; P5 pupils learn that a cell is the basic unit of life within reproduction.

Reproduction in plants and humans

How living things pass on characteristics, and the stages of sexual reproduction in flowering plants and humans.

Topics covered
  • A cell as the basic unit of life
  • Plants that reproduce by spores and by seeds
  • Pollination, fertilisation, seed dispersal and germination
  • Fertilisation in humans: a sperm fuses with an egg
  • Ovaries produce eggs and testes produce sperms
  • How fertilisation in flowering plants and humans is similar

Water and the water cycle

Changes of state of water and the factors that affect evaporation.

Topics covered
  • Water in three interchangeable states
  • Melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation and condensation
  • Melting point of ice and boiling point of water
  • Factors affecting evaporation: wind, temperature, exposed surface area
  • Evaporation and condensation in the water cycle
  • Water pollution and the importance of water to life

Respiratory and circulatory systems

How humans and plants take in gases and move substances around.

Topics covered
  • Gases in air: nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour
  • Respiratory system: nose, windpipe and lungs
  • Circulatory system: heart, blood and blood vessels
  • How plants, fish and humans take in oxygen
  • Water-carrying and food-carrying tubes in plants
  • How the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems work together

Electrical systems

Simple circuits built from diagrams, and what changes the current.

Topics covered
  • A circuit as a system of battery, wire, bulb and switch
  • A closed circuit allows current to flow
  • Building circuits from circuit diagrams
  • Effect of the number of batteries in series
  • Bulbs arranged in series and in parallel
  • Electrical conductors and insulators

Primary 5 Science Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 5 Science carries the heaviest content load of the primary years. Under the 2023 MOE Science syllabus, P5 covers reproduction in plants and humans, water and the water cycle, the respiratory and circulatory systems with transport in plants, and electrical circuits, substantially more than P3 to P4. P5 is also where questions increasingly ask the student to apply a concept to an unfamiliar scenario, not just recall a fact.

Our P5 Science home tutors coach structured answers explicitly, because the PSLE mark scheme rewards precise process language, the difference between 'the water evaporated' and 'the water gained heat and evaporated' is a mark. Lessons map to the school topical schedule and pre-empt the next CA / WA topic. We practise with past exam papers and school-style questions in the SEAB style. Outcomes vary by start grade and study time; parents can ask the tutor for updates at any time.

A typical P5 experiment: three identical towels are soaked with the same amount of water and hung in the same room. Towel A is spread out under a fan, towel B is spread out with no fan, and towel C is folded with no fan. Which dries fastest, and why? A common error is to say the fan 'blows the water away', or to bring in boiling. The expected answer names the factor and the process: towel A dries fastest because moving air increases the rate of evaporation.

Comparing B and C tests a different factor, exposed surface area. A tutor teaches your child to find the one variable that differs between each pair of set-ups before answering, since the syllabus lists wind, temperature and exposed surface area as the factors to investigate.

Primary 5 Science Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is P5 Foundation Science different from Standard?

Foundation covers the same topic areas with fewer and simpler outcomes. Foundation pupils state processes where Standard pupils describe them, and they study bulbs in series only, not in parallel. The factors affecting evaporation and the impact of water pollution are Standard outcomes only. A tutor needs to know your child's level so practice papers match it.

How much does Primary 5 Science tuition cost?

P5 is in our Upper Primary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$50 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$60 for a full-time tutor, and S$55 to S$75 for an ex-MOE teacher. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online, and if the first tutor is not the right fit, we re-match you at no charge.

Does my child need words like xylem and artery in P5?

No. The 2023 syllabus says the terms xylem, phloem, stomata, artery, vein and capillary are not required at primary level. Children describe water-carrying and food-carrying tubes and blood vessels instead. Detail such as air sacs in the lungs or heart chambers and valves is also not required. A tutor keeps answers at the right depth so time is not spent on secondary school content.

How should P5 Science revision be paced?

P5 has weighted assessments during the year and an end-of-year exam that can cover the whole year's work. Because the topics are new, short reviews after each school topic work better than cramming before the exam. A tutor usually goes over the latest topic each week and brings back older topics through mixed questions, so earlier work is not forgotten by the end of the year.
