What trips students up in Sec 2 Science
Sec 2 Science brings more calculation, more chemistry and more biology detail, in the year before upper secondary subjects are chosen.
Circuit questions: ammeter and voltmeter positions are misread, or current and potential difference are treated as the same thing.
Melting or dissolving is called a chemical change because 'something looks different'.
Word equations are incomplete, for example leaving water out of the products of neutralisation.
Heat transfer answers name conduction, convection or radiation but do not explain how heat moves in that situation.

Transport and reproductive system topics are learnt as lists, so questions on how parts work together get names only.
These topics lead directly into upper secondary Physics, Chemistry and Biology, so gaps here become harder to fix later.
Lower secondary Science themes for Sec 2
The second half of the G2/G3 Lower Secondary Science syllabus covers two themes, Interactions and Systems. Schools set their own order across Sec 1 and Sec 2, so the tutor follows your child's scheme of work and fills in any earlier topic the school has moved.
Forces, energy and heat
How forces transfer energy, and how heat moves and changes materials.
Topics covered
- Contact and non-contact forces
- Mass and weight, with force measured in newtons
- Turning effects of forces
- Pressure and work done (G3, optional for G2)
- Energy sources and their impact on the environment
- Conduction, convection and radiation
- Expansion and contraction
Chemical changes
Recognising chemical change and writing it as a word equation.
Topics covered
- A chemical change forms new substances
- Word equations for reactions
- Atoms are rearranged and mass is conserved
- Combustion, thermal decomposition, oxidation and neutralisation
- Acids, alkalis and indicators such as litmus and Universal Indicator
- How chemical reactions help and harm us
Interactions within ecosystems
How living things interact with each other and with non-living factors.
Topics covered
- Physical factors such as water, temperature, light and acidity
- Adaptive traits and survival
- Predator and prey, mutualism and parasitism
- Energy flow through food chains and food webs
- Climate change and maintaining biodiversity
Electrical and body systems
A man-made system and three human systems, each studied as parts working together.
Topics covered
- Current, potential difference and resistance, with SI units
- Circuit diagrams with ammeters and voltmeters
- Electrical safety and power
- The human digestive system
- Transport systems in plants and humans
- The human reproductive system, puberty and the menstrual cycle
Secondary 2 Science Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 2 completes lower secondary Science, with more on human body systems, electricity, chemical changes, ecology and energy. It is also the year that decides upper secondary subjects: schools use Sec 2 results to allocate subject combinations, including whether a student takes Pure Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology as separate subjects) or Combined Science. That choice affects later options, including some JC subject combinations.

A Sec 2 home tutor focuses on the topics that carry into Sec 3 (the particle model, electricity and chemical changes) and on exam technique for structured questions: answering the command word that is asked, with the right keywords and units. Lessons follow the school's scheme of work for your child's level, and the tutor can give an honest view of whether Pure Sciences suit your child.
A typical Sec 2 question asks which of these is a chemical change: ice melting, sugar dissolving in water, an iron nail rusting, or wax melting. Many students choose sugar dissolving because the sugar seems to disappear. The correct answer is rusting, because a new substance, rust, is formed and the iron cannot easily be recovered. A follow-up may ask for the word equation for a neutralisation, such as hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium chloride + water, where students often leave out the water.
A tutor teaches a short test for every change: is a new substance formed, and can the original be easily recovered? The same reasoning returns in upper secondary Chemistry, which builds directly on these lower secondary ideas.

Secondary 2 Science Tuition: frequently asked questions
Can my child move from G2 to G3 Science?
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, schools review subject levels at set points, and a student who does well at G2 may be offered G3 for that subject. The timing and criteria are set by each school, so ask your child's form or subject teacher. If your child aims to move up, a tutor can cover G3 outcomes such as pressure and resistance investigations ahead of time.
How much does Secondary 2 Science tuition cost?
Sec 2 is in our Lower Secondary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$50 for an undergraduate tutor, S$50 to S$65 for a full-time tutor, and S$60 to S$80 for an ex-MOE teacher. If the tutor is not the right fit after the trial lesson or later on, we re-match you at no charge.
Does Sec 2 Science need calculation practice?
Yes, more than Sec 1. Sec 2 topics bring in force in newtons and, at G3, pressure and the cost of electricity in kilowatt-hours. Students also read ammeters and voltmeters and work with data from experiments. A tutor practises setting out each calculation with formula, substitution and unit, which is how marks are given in upper secondary Physics and Chemistry.
How is Sec 2 Science assessed?
Sec 2 has weighted assessments during the year and an end-of-year exam set by the school, with no mid-year exam. MOE's syllabus says end-of-year assessment should sample the syllabus across both years of lower secondary, so the Sec 2 exam can include Sec 1 topics. Revision should therefore cover Sec 1 work such as the particle model and separation techniques.
