Why Sec 1 Science feels different
The step from PSLE Science to Sec 1 is bigger than most families expect. These struggles tend to appear in the first year.
Density calculations go wrong because units are left out, or g/cm³ and kg/m³ are mixed up.
Elements, compounds and mixtures are confused, for example calling salt water a compound.
Particle model answers say particles 'expand' when heated, instead of moving faster and further apart.
Practical questions on zero error, parallax error, accuracy and precision are left blank or answered with everyday meanings.

Answers are still written in primary school style, without the term the marker needs, such as diffusion or solvent.
Sec 1 Science rewards precise definitions and clear reasoning, and that habit is easier to build early in the year.
Lower secondary Science themes for Sec 1
MOE sets G2/G3 Lower Secondary Science as one two-year syllabus in five themes: the Scientific Endeavour, Diversity, Models, Interactions and Systems. It does not fix which topics fall in Sec 1, so the tutor follows your school's scheme of work. The first three themes in syllabus order are below. G1 Science has its own syllabus, built around modules such as Our Environment.
The Scientific Endeavour
How science works and how to measure carefully, which every later topic relies on.
Topics covered
- What science is and how scientific knowledge develops
- Scientific inquiry and planning investigations
- SI units and choosing suitable measuring instruments
- Accuracy and precision
- Zero error and parallax error
- Safe practice in the laboratory
Diversity of matter
Classifying matter by its physical properties and chemical make-up, and separating mixtures.
Topics covered
- Physical properties such as conductivity, melting and boiling point, and density
- Calculating density and predicting floating or sinking
- Elements, compounds and mixtures
- Metals and non-metals in the Periodic Table
- Solute, solvent, solution and suspension
- Magnetic attraction, filtration, evaporation, distillation and paper chromatography
Models
Using models to explain what cannot be seen directly: light rays, cells, particles and atoms.
Topics covered
- The ray model of light and reflection from smooth and rough surfaces
- Parts of typical plant and animal cells
- Cells, tissues, organs and systems
- The particulate model of solids, liquids and gases
- Diffusion
- Atoms and molecules
Secondary 1 Science Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 1 Science is a big step from PSLE Science. Lower secondary Science introduces models that explain what cannot be seen: the particle model of matter, elements, compounds and mixtures and how to separate them, cells as the unit of life, and the ray model of light. MOE sets lower secondary Science as one two-year syllabus, so each school decides which topics fall in Sec 1 and Sec 2. Answers need definitions, units and simple calculations, and the practical work asks students to plan and record experiments properly. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, Science is taken at G1, G2 or G3, and the content and pace differ by level.

A Sec 1 home tutor bridges the gap early: the right definitions and keywords, the particle model used consistently, and calculations with units shown. Lessons follow the school's scheme of work for your child's level, and the tutor flags whether the level is a good fit. Strong lower secondary Science opens the way to Pure Sciences in Sec 3.
A typical Sec 1 density question gives a stone of mass 54 g. When it is lowered into a measuring cylinder, the water level rises from 30 cm³ to 50 cm³. The volume of the stone is the rise, 20 cm³, so its density is 54 ÷ 20 = 2.7 g/cm³. Common errors are using 50 cm³ as the volume, dividing volume by mass, or leaving out the unit.
A follow-up asks whether the stone floats in water of density 1 g/cm³, and the expected answer compares the two: 2.7 g/cm³ is greater than 1 g/cm³, so it sinks. Finding volume by displacement is a G3 outcome and optional at G2, but the density formula is required at both levels, so the tutor drills formula, substitution and answer with unit every time.

Secondary 1 Science Tuition: frequently asked questions
What do G1, G2 and G3 Science mean?
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, secondary subjects are offered at three levels: G1, G2 and G3, with G3 the most demanding. Your child's starting level in Sec 1 is linked to their PSLE results, and schools may let students take some subjects at a different level. G2 and G3 Science share one syllabus, with some outcomes optional for G2. G1 Science has a separate syllabus.
How much does Secondary 1 Science tuition cost?
Sec 1 is in our Lower Secondary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$50 for an undergraduate tutor, S$50 to S$65 for a full-time tutor, and S$60 to S$80 for an ex-MOE teacher. Most Sec 1 students have one lesson a week of 1.5 hours, at home or online, starting with a trial lesson.
What is the difference between G2 and G3 Science?
G2 and G3 follow the same syllabus, but some learning outcomes are optional for G2. Examples include refraction and dispersion of light, investigating the law of reflection, using a microscope to find cell parts, solubility, and how resistance affects current. G3 students are expected to cover these. A tutor needs to know your child's level so lessons match what the school will actually test.
How is Sec 1 Science assessed?
Sec 1 students sit weighted assessments during the year and an end-of-year exam set by the school, with no mid-year exam. Schools may also assess practical skills. Because Lower Secondary Science is one two-year syllabus, Sec 2 assessments can draw on Sec 1 ideas such as the particle model and density, so Sec 1 gaps do not stay in Sec 1.
