Where Primary 6 Science marks go
In P6, children revise four years of Science while learning the last new topics. These are the problems that show up in school papers and the preliminary exam.
Food web questions are answered by following one food chain only, so the effect of removing an organism is predicted wrongly.
Energy conversion answers skip a step, for example going from potential energy straight to sound energy for a falling ball.
In photosynthesis experiments, your child misses which factor was removed in each set-up, so the conclusion is about the wrong variable.
Friction and gravity are mixed up when a question asks why a moving object slows down.

Multiple-choice questions are rushed without checking each option against the data given, which costs more now that they carry 60 marks.
P6 is mostly about using what your child already knows accurately and quickly.

P6 Science content and PSLE practice
The 2023 MOE syllabus places forces, interactions within the environment, photosynthesis and energy conversion in P6. The PSLE paper then tests all P3 to P6 topics, so lessons mix new content with revision.

Primary 6 Science Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 6 PSLE Science is graded on the AL banded system. From 2026 the paper has 30 multiple-choice questions worth 60 marks and 10 to 11 structured questions worth 40 marks, so both booklets decide the grade. The P6 syllabus completes the primary Science coverage (interactions within ecosystems, forces, energy forms and conversions, the environment), but P6 is fundamentally a revision and exam-technique year. The marks gap between AL2 and AL4 students is often less about content than about precision: checking each multiple-choice option against the data given, and writing structured answers that name the correct concept and cause-and-effect chain in the words the mark scheme expects.

Our P6 Science home tutors run a first-lesson diagnostic against recent PSLE papers, then structure the year around multiple-choice and structured-question practice: identifying the concept being tested, structuring the answer, and using precise process vocabulary (gains/loses heat, transfers energy, exerts a force). We practise on past PSLE papers and school-style prelim questions. The plan builds in multiple timed full papers ahead of the September prelim. Outcomes vary by start grade and study time; parents can ask the tutor for updates at any time.
A typical P6 food web question: grass is eaten by grasshoppers and rabbits, grasshoppers are eaten by frogs, and both frogs and rabbits are eaten by snakes. What happens to the frog population if all the rabbits are removed? Many children answer that nothing happens because frogs do not eat rabbits. A better answer follows the web: with no rabbits, the snakes eat more frogs, so the frog population decreases, at least at first.
A follow-up may ask about the grasshoppers, which may increase because there is more grass and fewer frogs to eat them. A tutor teaches your child to trace every arrow into and out of the organism in the question before answering, and to say 'at first' when the effect may change over time.

Primary 6 Science Tuition: frequently asked questions
What is the PSLE Science format from 2026?
From 2026, PSLE Science is one paper of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 100 marks. Booklet A has 30 multiple-choice questions at 2 marks each, for 60 marks. Booklet B has 10 to 11 structured questions worth 2 to 5 marks each, for 40 marks. The paper is set on the 2023 Primary Science syllabus and tests knowledge as well as the application of scientific inquiry.
How much does Primary 6 Science tuition cost?
P6 is in our Upper Primary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$50 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$60 for a full-time tutor, and S$55 to S$75 for an ex-MOE teacher. In the PSLE year, a shortlist of tutor profiles within 16 hours means lessons can start soon after you ask.
Is Foundation Science very different at PSLE?
Foundation Science covers the same themes with fewer outcomes. In P6 it leaves out energy conversion, elastic spring force, food webs, and the terms organism, population and community. Foundation results are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6 to AL8 in the PSLE Score. If that is your child's level, choose a tutor who teaches from Foundation materials.
Should P6 tuition focus on content or practice papers?
Both, in a sensible order. Early in the year, the tutor secures the P6 topics and any weak P5 topics, since PSLE draws on P3 to P6. As the preliminary exam approaches, more lessons go to timed practice and reviewing mistakes, including multiple-choice questions, which now carry 60 of the 100 marks. The balance depends on how secure your child is when tuition starts.
